TF_SwimfeederWhere in England would you consider the most ideally placed location for open match fishing? taking into account travelling to venues and the quality of the venues within a 100 mile radius?

bigroachParticipantI live in worcester and have to agree. We have woodlands view, larford and moorlands all within a 10 drive. The wye is only 24 miles from here. U have the seven on our door step. The Avon with big matches at. Evesham all summer. We have the cut all around the west midlands. Barston is only a half hour drive. Need I carry on

whittyI live near Leeds & can be at Woodlands & The Oaks in 30 mins & Lindholme in 45 ins. Plus loads of smaller venues that run opens well within an hours travelling. Langwith, Moorfields etc.
There’s also the River Ouse that holds 80 peggers in winter, if that’s your cup of tea. -

TF_andynorth2003ParticipantLike whitty, I live in Leeds.
I can be on the M1 in 5 mins, M62 in 10 mins, Al in 10 mins.
Although theres nothing really in Leeds, apart from the Leeds Liverpool canal, which is full of shopping trolleys and gin clear, i can be at Oaks, Woodlands, Lindholme within 45 mins.
Makins, Lakeview, Cudmore etc etc are all within 1h30mins. Good if you like a change of venue, rather than just fishing on your doorstep every week.

TF_nitrogot to be midlands, you have woodland view, barston, tunnell barn, packington, larford not far and loads of canals. People who live in that area are very fortunate from a fishing perspective.

TF_D.W.Cambridgeshire without any shadow of a doubt – not just for match fishing, but for all disciplines of angling.
Plenty of commercials, fen drains for winter angling, natural stillwaters for specimen work, East Anglian & Essex coasts within 100 miles, Grafham Water for the trout anglers (or any of the other main 3 EA game reservoirs within an hour drive). Simply spoilt for choice & I moved away from it to an area where there is very little specimen angling!!!!!

TF_budnuddParticipantIm also from Leeds and due to close links with major motorways we are never far from many top class venues but..
If you class it on a doorstep basis its gotta be either South Yorkshire or the Midlands for me. S.yorks is literally rammed with excellent venues but the Midlands has the bigger and more famous venues.

TF_Nigel.I am a mile from the centre of England here at Barston. (Packington is even closer to the center of England statue)
And from a match carp fishing point of view, we have
Packington a mile away
Blythe 2
Earlswood 5
Blue lias 15
Makins 20
Drayton 25
Clattercote 25
and Boddington 30 -

AnonymousManchester has a lot more venues than Liverpool, Boss bait but not many. Put a quality commercial fishery in between these two cities and you would clean up. 80 match anglers on Partridge again today and thats 35 minutes from me. Every pool was solid with club and pleasure anglers. While it has potential. Its not yet what you could call a top commercial fishery. Cudmore at 65 miles is the closest quality commercial fishery to me.

TF_dave brittainIn the south west, south of Bristol you’re spoilt for commercials and natural venues. the Rivers Avons, Dorset Stour, Huntspill, Parret are superb venues although they do not hold a great deal of matches. Canal wise we have the Kennet and Avon and Bridgewater canal and for big weight commercials you need look no further than Viaducat and Stafford Moor.
That said purely from a match fishing point of view if I relocated, (I’ve lived in the North East and Lincoln previously), I’d be very tempted to move to Worcester or thereabouts as it would cut my travelling in half and I’d be closer to a lot more match venues that i’d enjoy, (Severn,Wye, Larford).

TF_kev825are you thinking about moving Bob??

17/05/2010 at 6:45 am #104934
TF_SwimfeederYes Kev, I am, I was in the Midland and Gloucester area last week, I also travelled through Northampton to get there, and I could not help thinking what it would be like to have easy access to so many top venues.
Living right on the East coast, I have always had to travel huge distances for W/L, Nationals etc. -

Mind you I’m now living in Belgium so all the major venues are a bit out of my way at the moment… haha -

TF_welshmagicWould have to be the midlands/worcester area for me. If I were to move this is where I would be looking as the concentration of top match venues is like nowhere else in the UK

TF_PaddyIt’s got to be the Midlands, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire area.
Fall out of bed and you fall into the one of many, many, many canals and when you fancy a change discover miles and miles of either the main 3 rivers, namely the river severn, the river avon and the river wye. If there in flood, well have a look at either of the river stour, the river theme, or the river salworpe, which can be fantastic when the main larger rivers are in the fields, due to them holding back so much.
If you get bored with that lot, there are still waters. Thats all i’m gonna say on them, because there are to many to even contemplate!
