        Rutland Water
        Fish week 1,055(season 24,113) Returns 180 (5793) Rod average 5.86(4.16)
Throughout the hot summer period Rutland Water has fished well and last week was no exception with 180 rod returns recording an outstanding 1,055 fish, giving an average of 5.86. Yet again it’s been a week of boats catching the vast majority. However, a few more rods have given the banks a go and have caught fish. The best fish of the week was taken by Bill Marshall who returned a Brown estimated between 5 and 6lb last Saturday. The best Rainbow weighed 4lb 12oz and was taken by A Munro of Kettering.

Anglers looking for a quick limit have boat fished the main basin around the aerators and have also taken fish along the Normanton bank to Fantasy Island, while others used ‘W’ Buoy as a starting point to catch fish steadily. Boat anglers venturing up to the top of the South Arm were rewarded with fewer limits but bigger fish. These specimens are feeding around the weed beds close in averaging 3lb in weight. Dries, fry patterns, and nymphs all working very well. Among those anglers catching in this area were Peter de Kremer and Nigel Norton. Using dries throughout the day last Saturday the pair had around ten quality Rainbows. Another angler reported losing a Brown estimated around the 8lb mark in the weed beds up the under fished North Arm.

The middle of the South Arm has also resulted in fish being caught, across from Berry Butts through to Spud Bay. The continual stocking of the reservoir has seen 14,000 fish released in the last four weeks, with approximately half weighing 750 grams and the other half at 900g. These fish were mainly stocked down the bottom of both arms, however it looks like a good number have got into the Main Basin already.

        Tuesday Night Boat League
The final evening of the series was fished in a very strong westerly wind with boats excluded from the Main Basin. Anglers headed up the South Arm. Keith Jones won with six fish weighing 15lb 8oz – his bag included the best fish of the match a 4lb 3oz Rainbow.
        1st Keith Jones 6 fish for 15lb 8oz
        2nd Rich Cooper 4 fish for 8lb
        3rd Mick Bennett 4 fish for 7lb 11oz

The overall winner of the 2014 Tuesday Night Boat League was Richard Cooper who won in convincing style, to retain his 2013 title, with 94 points, 26 points more than his nearest rival Mick Bennett. Richard was presented with a £50 tackle voucher by Rutland Warden Nigel Savage. The biggest fish of the series weighed in at 5lb 8½oz and this was a Brown caught by Keith Jones during week 9. Keith won a £10 tackle voucher. The total number of rods fishing the boat league this season was 175, managing 512 fish for a rod average of just under 3.

Anglers celebrated the final evening with a delicious cake provided by Hilary Tomlinson – this has become a traditional finale to the Tuesday Boat League. Excellent fish and chips have been supplied every week by Sid’s of Stamford.

Anglian Water Lochstyle 4 man team 13 August
Twelve teams took part in an outstanding match with 35 of the 48 competitors achieving eight fish! There were a few shocks as well with some previously high ranking teams not achieving the results. With 100 metre ‘no fishing’ zone enforced in the match and no time bonus a good many of the boats started off down the South Arm area, with just a few going into the main basin itself.

The fish stocked in the last four weeks showed well coming out from Manton Bay, New Zealand Point across to the Sailing Club frontage. Boats moving into the Main Basin found fish around ‘W’ Buoy.

Team winners were Flash Attack Sharks led by Craig Barr, Mark Harrison, Andy Taylor and Carl Malpass. Mark Harrison gave the team a huge boost, taking top rod with an eight fish limit for 19lb 15 5/8oz. Mark also took the best fish a Rainbow of 3lb 10¼oz.

        1st Flash Attack Sharks 30 fish for 61lb 12 5/8oz
        2nd Fish Hawks B 32 fish for 60lb 15oz
        3rd Greenwell Persuaders 32 fish for 58lb 15 3/8oz
        4th Team Ellinor 32 fish for 57lb 15¾oz
        5th Team Rutland 32 fish for 56lb 11 7/8oz
        6th Pitsford Pirates 31 fish for 54lb 9 5/8oz
        7th Fish Hawks C 30 fish for 53lb 11 1/8oz
        8th Fish Hawks A 29 fish for 53lb 2 5/8oz
        9th England Youth 27 fish for 49lb 13½oz
        10th Peregrine Fly Fishers 26 fish for 49lb 8¾oz
        11th Soldier Palmers 22 fish for 42lb 11 5/8oz
        12th Rio Masters 19 fish for 36lb 13 1/8oz

Rutland Water has been very consistent with good numbers of fish caught and prospects look excellent. More bank anglers are exploring the many weed beds where boat anglers are already taking fish and some big specimens are starting to appear.

        Grafham Water
        Fish week 232 (season 19,957) Returns 121 (4,129) Rod average 1.91(4.83)
The statistics for the week reflect the strong winds that hampered fishing and restricted boats. As the week progressed fishing picked up with the Dam fishing well for the bank anglers. Season ticket holder John Johnson had some great sport including a lovely Rainbow over 4lb. Most bank anglers took the majority of their fish from the South end of the Dam on floating lines with shrimp patterns, GRHE, diawl bachs and olive buzzers fished along the margins of the Dam wall. The same methods have also been successful along the G bank.

Boat anglers have enjoyed some good fishing in Sanctuary Bay and Hedge End giving the most consistent angling on a mixture of lines from intermediates to Di7’s. The most prolific flies for the boat anglers have been blobs, cat or viva boobies, cormorants and diawl bachs. There has also been good fishing at P and B buoys by using the same methods as at the Dam.

        Pitsford Water
        Fish week 195 (season 8,838) Returns 46 (2,232) Rod average 4.2(3.9)

The rod average for the week is a healthy 4.2 – mainly as a result of the cooler weather with lots of fish showing in the main basin and Narrows.

Pip Jeffs and boat partner Ashley Cooper had a morning boat and took 22 fish by lunchtime, fishing teams of wets and dabblers on floating lines. Several other anglers have reported fantastic top of the water sport.

The Polish Lure Anglers Society had a day’s lure fishing with 30 anglers sampling the lure fishing for trout. They had a great day catching fish up to 56cm.

The best methods for fly fishing are floating or midge tip lines and FAB’s teamed with nymphs or wet fly patterns such as silver Invicta, Dunkeld or dabblers. Dry fly has accounted for some fish but they are not confidently taking off the top yet. The best areas are the Main Bowl and through the Narrows.

        Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish week 207 (season 11,321) Returns 78(1,768) Rod average 2.6(6.4)
It’s been a challenging week for some at Ravensthorpe but anglers fishing the drift with wets or dry fly have been rewarded with some fantastic sport.

Expert dry fly fisher Mick O’Farrell and his young protégé Geoff Makin capitalised on the fact that fish have been up in the water and actively feeding on very small midges. The pair brought over 20 fish to the boat with some quality Rainbows amongst them.

The blustery westerly winds that have been prevalent this week have made fishing with nymphs and buzzers difficult. Fishing with blobs and other lures has also been a hit and miss affair.

The most successful method this week was fishing with wet flies just sub surface. Mr Watterson and his boat partner accounted for 32 fish whilst drifting across from Tall Willow Bay to the Island on Saturday. Some of the fish fell to traditional wets but the clear favourite was the daddy pulled quite fast. Once again the two anglers reported releasing several silvered up full tailed Rainbows in the 4lb plus bracket.

On Sunday Ravensthorpe hosted the Mick Griffin Challenge match with a good turn out of 30 anglers. This friendly contest was enjoyed by all despite some difficult rather windy conditions.

Successful Northampton angler Pete Webb won the shield with four cracking fish for 10lb 5oz. Pete had a narrow lead over his boat partner Patt Flynn who came second with four fish for 10lb 4oz, including a fish of over 5lb. Mick Clark took third place with four fish for 8lb 10oz. Many of the anglers enjoyed a lovely meal at the Chequers pub in Ravensthorpe afterwards.

The bank fishing at Ravensthorpe has become more difficult with the Dam being the best bet.

Best Rainbow 5lb 10oz taken by Paul Rolles.

Best boat areas Middle of reservoir, Main Basin, Island to Catwalk.

        Best bank areas The Dam.

        Best methods See report.

Mid week boat winner John Smith.
