Eighteen year old Matthew Holdroyd from New Biggin by the Sea, Northumberland enjoyed a terrific trip to Rutland Water last week. First Matt bagged an eight fish limit for 25lb 11oz with his best fish just under5lb. He boat fished the North Arm shallows with a set up of boobie on the point and nymph combination and despite the bright conditions found fish moving on the top. Matthew then went on to share a boat with local angler Rob Edmunds on Sunday and the pair recorded 10 fish for 34lb. Matt and Rob fished for around 4½ hours and caught in the North Arm shallows.Wal Holynski of Leicester only started fly fishing this season, following a beginners course at Rutland Water. Wal took the best fish of the week a 6lb 1oz Rainbow. Heeding the advice of Tackle Shop Assistant Robbie Winram he fished the North Arm shallows off the bank and was rewarded with a brace of Rainbows, including the biggest of the week weighing in at 6lb 1oz. Wal used a small mylar floating fry as suggested by Rutland Warden Nigel Savage to capture his specimen fish.
The best Brown of the week fell to Bob Lochran from Leicester. Bob fished a diawl bach to land this Brown of 3lb 1oz. He bank fished off the old Disabled Bay area near East Creek.
Saturday was the best day of last week with good numbers of fish coming from Fantasy Island to the blue pipes (following a change of wind to Easterly last Friday). Bank anglers caught off the North Arm shallows, Old Hall, Old Hall flat, Normanton, Stockie Bay Point back to Whitwell Creek.
With good fish showing at times on the surface, dry flies and nymphs have been very successful for both bank and boat fishermen. Boat anglers in the open water have caught fish on various lines on small lures, boobies and gold/silver tubes. Fish are feeding on buzzers, large and small, corixa, daphnia and shrimp and also the huge concentration of this year’s coarse fish fry and sticklebacks in some areas.
Upcoming events are the Anglian Water Loch Style four man team event, it is not too late to enter a team in this popular competition – contact the lodge on 01780 686441.
