Anglian Water WaterAid Fly Fishing Challenge – Friday 8 September
A huge thank you to everyone who sponsored, took part or who helped to organise this event in support of WaterAid. An enjoyable day was had by all and we hope that those anglers who were trying fly fishing for the first time were encouraged to try it again. Members of Rutland Water Fly Fishers yet again proved themselves indispensible helping with a number of vital tasks including acting as boatmen.

The weather on the day presented quite tough fishing conditions being very warm and bright with only a light breeze. Despite this some excellent fish were caught with the rod average being 1.03 and the largest fish, caught by Jon Endall, Novice Angler, weighing in at 5lb 13 oz.

The Winning Team was IWS Day Trippers, one of 7 teams from IWS, with 17 fish weighing 35lb 9oz. Gordon Inglis, from Scottish Water, won the trophy for Winning Experienced Angler with 6 fish weighing 18lb 11oz. Gordon and his boat partner, Robin Lambert, were fishing half way up the North arm opposite the draw off tower and about 50 – 100 yards from the bank. They were fishing fast glass lines with a white booby (size 14) on the point and buzzers/nymphs behind.

We have yet to do the final reckoning but we estimate that the day raised around £17,000 for WaterAid.

The brighter weather conditions last week reduced the number of fish caught for both bank and boat anglers, however, the big fish that have featured this season continue to get bigger. An 8lb 2¼oz Brown caught by Iain Barr topped this week’s list. A number of fish in the 5lb – 8lb range have featured. Hambleton’s Dick Stephen and Roy Taylor of Oakham netted Rainbows of 7lb 6oz and 7lb 1oz respectively. Andrew Flitcroft of Oakham (editor of Trout and Salmon magazine) had a 7lb 3oz Brown on day one of the Lexus Team final. Mark Matterson had best fish of the Police Competition last week with a 6lb 7oz Rainbow. This fish came from the Old Hall Bay area of the South Arm.

A number of big fish have been sighted in many areas of the reservoir, with the biggest seen patrolling the shoreline feeding on sticklebacks, corixa, snails and fry.

Prospects are very good with big fish showing in good numbers. Settled weather conditions will improve catch rates. More fish are due to be stocked early in the coming week.

September is a very popular month and boats can often be fully booked. Please call the lodge to check for availability and book well in advance to avoid disappointment (telephone 01780 686441).

Lexus European Team final Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September
132 Anglers representing 22 of the top teams in the country fought out a tough two day contest on Rutland Water, in the 2012 Lexus European Team Final.

Despite the challenging conditions (bright and windy) there were several good bags of fish brought to the scales including Team Rio Masters Julian Hubbard who took three fish for 13lb plus. But best fish on Day One went to Trout & Salmon editor Andrew Flitcroft, representing Orvis Team Rutland, who landed a spectacular 7lb brownie.

Day two saw another good split of boats, 20 heading for the main basin, 14 up the South Arm and the remainder to the North Arm. Team Airflo’s Keith Tanner took a good fish during the first hour of the match at the top of the North Arm. Iain Barr landed the heaviest fish of the match – weighing in an 8lb 2oz Brown.

        Fish week 310 (season 17,072) Returns 121 (4,672) Rod average 2.56 (3.65)
The best recorded bag of the week at Grafham Water fell to Adrian Cook from Suffolk who weighed in at 22lb 10oz. The largest fish of the week fell to Rick Barlow with a 6lb 4oz Rainbow. A Hughs took the best Brown at 5lb 6oz.

A wide range of methods have been tried this week and some have been very successful in spite of the challenging weather conditions. The most prolific areas of the reservoir have been the South End of the Dam, Plummer Park, Savages Creek, G,K and F buoys and Sanctuary Bay. One regular visitor to Grafham having seen a lot of feeding trout in Savages Creek, but not able to interest them, eventually tried a floating line with a small booby on the point supporting two submerged hoppers. Using a medium figure of eight retrieve he caught his limit. Nymphing tactics with diawl bachs and crunchers on a midge tip line proved successful in Gaynes Cove and minkies on a Di3 produced the goods off the Dam.

With more fish switching on to the masses of fry Pitsford Water is fishing well. Anglers have found fish to be in a taking mood especially amongst the masses of fry around the margins. Good catches have been reported from both the bank and the boat from all around the water.

The best boat areas have been the Dam, Pines, the Narrows and Rigbys. The best bank areas have been the Gravels, Stone Barn and Duffers. The most successful methods are floating or midge tip with diawls and crunchers, with fry patterns now starting to attract fish.

Those anglers that have fished at Ravensthorpe this week have had some great buzzer fishing. Mr Brady fished on Thursday taking 17 fish on black buzzers up at the Coton End – his best fish between 5-6lb. Another angler catching well on Thursday, was Mr Usher who took 13 fish on green buzzers and diawl bachs.

Dan Smith fished on a day ticket and took 14 fish on a white and green lure on a sinking line with dries also starting to catch. Whatever your preferred method – Ravensthorpe is the place to be.
