Fish week 971 (season 25,871) Returns 556 (7,450) Rod average 1.74 (3.47)
Unsettled weather has slowed fishing down a little with bank anglers recording fish off the peninsula and boat anglers finding fish off Lax Hill, Manton and the Main Basin. Variable winds have been a feature along with colder conditions and a good fall of rain last Friday. Last weekend there was also an Easterly wind. Despite the persistent rain and cold on Sunday Nick Halstead and Sheena Goode had an excellent day with 8 fish around 28lb. Nick said “I’ve fished Rutland many times, but this is the best day’s boat fishing I have ever had – brilliant despite the horrible weather!” Nick, from Brighouse in West Yorkshire, found Corixa feeding fish were taking daddys on the point, cdc olive and brown bob’s bits on floating line.Notable catches during the week included Gordon Alleyne who caught and released a Brown estimated between 7 and 8lb from the bank. C Corbett of Sutton Coldfield recorded a 5lb 5oz Rainbow and a 5lb Brown. Jim Watts of Ryhall had a 5lb 4oz Brown from a boat last Wednesday. John Seaton, senior warden at Rutland, returned six Rainbows the same day. Newcomer to the sport Dan Pitcher of Langham went fishing after work and caught his first trout weighing 2lb 12oz from Whitwell Creek. Dan followed this up on his next visit with another fish off the Peninsula.
Following on from the hugely successful Juniors Day held during the summer, members of Rutland Water Fly Fishers and Anglian Water hosted a boat fishing session for youngsters on Saturday. The most successful of these young anglers was Harry McEuen who had a superb conditioned 3lb 10¼oz Rainbow whilst fishing with Brian Bonner. Harry caught two fish in total that went 5lb 14½oz. Calleb Tomalin managed three fish with Peter de Kremer, whilst Jesse Dean had two fish whilst sharing a boat with Dave Porter. Youngsters Arron Carnie, Josh Tomalin and Stephen Ferreira – Gomes also caught one fish each. A fly box was presented to the angler catching the best fish – this was awarded to Harry McEuen for his superb 3lb 10¼oz Rainbow by Senior Warden John Seaton. Huge thanks to everyone who volunteered to make this day a great success.
Looking ahead there is a vast amount of food available for the fish with sticklebacks, fry, corixa, snails, daphnia and shrimp. There are also good hatches of buzzers (large and small). Last week saw some really good hatches of olives, especially on Friday. Bank anglers are reporting very good fish moving close in, not only down the North Arm, but around the Peninsula. Anglers prepared to keep moving have had the most success. Boat anglers should try drifts along the margins round the reservoir, other than the bottom of both Arms. Whilst deep fished flies in the open water should find fish feeding on daphnia.
September is a very popular month and boats can often be fully booked. Please call the lodge to check for availability and book well in advance to avoid disappointment (telephone 01780 686441).

Grafham Water has fished well this week for both bank and boat anglers with a healthy rod average of 3.06. The best Rainbow of the week fell to bank angler Paul Knight from Grafham village. This was a fin perfect fish of 6lb 7½oz taken from the middle of the Dam on a GRHE. Cameron Neil took the best bag of the week with 8 fish for 23lb 14¾oz.
Most effective methods on the bank have been floating lines with GRHE, crunchers, shrimp patterns and diawl bachs mainly at the Dam and Gaynes Cove. Boat anglers are also enjoying good sport with floaters and sink tips and Di7’s have worked well in the mouth of Savages. The main areas for boat anglers have been G and D buoys, the Willows, Dam, Gaynes Cove, Hedge End and Savages. Best flies have been crunchers, diawl bachs, shrimp, GRHE, cat’s booby and blobs.
Competition news
Anglian Water Airflo Wildcard Final
This is a very special year for the Anglian Water Airflo International. In 2012 we celebrate 30 years of this prestigious six man team event first run in 1982 by Benson and Hedges. We have organised a Wildcard Final in 2012 to give some of the teams who have not qualified the chance to fish at the International Final. Forty eight anglers representing eight teams came forward to fish this match held on Grafham Water on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 September. There were some terrific prizes to be won including £600 of Airflo vouchers for the winning team along with some tasteful glassware trophies.Grafham Water continued
Despite difficult conditions the Granite City teamsters of Bill McIlroy, Cameron Neale, Dave Doherty, Graham Hayward, Keith Jones and Andy Hutson had a commanding lead over the field of an astounding 20lb at the end of day one.
Day two produced similar conditions with the stiff breeze blowing straight into the Dam making the targeting of the shrimp feeders very tricky. A few boats gambled on the bigger fish to be had in and around Savages, but most of the 24 strong fleet headed for the Dam area at the start of the match. Granite City were the overall winners and elected for Di7 lines, Cats Booby on the point and a Black Blob on the dropper and figure of eight with a rapid retrieve. Five of the team’s boats fished Savages and one fished G Buoy. Clive Chatwin, fishing for Greenwell Persuaders, had the secret of big fish success taking the biggest fish each day both weighing in just over 5lb.
Overall Result:
1. Granite City 58 fish for 135lb 131/4oz

Fish week 535 (season 14,750) Returns 167(4,059) Rod average 3.2(3.6)
The changeable weather conditions have played their part at Pitsford Water this week. Most anglers have found fish, although methods have seemed to vary greatly. Reports of good top of the water sport this week have seen 4-5lb fish being taken by boat anglers using wet and dry patterns with hares ear, crunchers and imitation dries being the most favoured.Other good catches have come from intermediate sinking lines with cormorants and snail patterns, boobies and fry taking fish regularly.
Bank anglers have also enjoyed some good catches. On overcast days the fishing has been consistent throughout the day, especially around the weedbeds and drop offs using small nymphs and buzzers. On brighter days , early morning and late evenings fishing fry patterns has worked extremely well.
