        Rutland Water
        Fish week 685 (season 32,741) Returns 209 (7,030) Rod average 3.27 (4.65)
The action at Rutland Water this week has been dominated by the Lexus Team Event which included two practice days and the competition days on Friday and Saturday. Any doubts about the effect of the recent hot weather were quickly dispelled. With high calibre teams competing, over the two days they managed a total of 1,039 fish for a rod average of 4.31 and an average fish weight of 2lb 4oz. The match was fished to a four fish limit followed by catch and release.

Weather conditions saw the competitors drifting on a southerly wind on the first day, on the second day overnight rain came in from the northwest, with 8-10mph winds.

The decision to switch the aerators off for the match proved interesting. Many areas were covered on very long drifts from the whole of the main basin, then the middle of the south arm from Yellowstone, all the way across to East Creek and the Sailing Club. Methods were set ups of various sinking lines with mini lures, boobies, blobs, cormorants and nymphs.

Only a few boats ventured down the South Arm, one of them being the top individual for the two days, captain of Welsh Hawks, Russell Owen. Russell had the whole of Manton Bay along with boat partner Tom Speak fishing for Stocks Harriers. Russell took 9 fish, the best at 3lb 14oz, whilst Tom had four fish including the best fish of the match a fine 5lb 7oz Rainbow. The pair fished nymphs on floating lines. Top local angler was Craig Barr of Oakham. Craig managed seven fish on both days helping his team Seighford Sharks to victory in the process. Craig also caught the best Rainbow of the week on practice day with a very hard fighting 5lb 12oz Rainbow from the South Arm. The best Brown of the week weighed 4lb 3oz and was taken by Mark Thomas fishing for Harvey Angling Margam on the second day of the match.

Boat fishing has been outstanding for the time of year with match anglers proving that there are fish in other areas as well as the main basin. Bank anglers are fewer but more fish are beginning to show.

Once again Grafham Water has fished well for both bank and boat anglers with the vast majority of trout being caught in the top four feet of the water.

Bank anglers continue to enjoy excellent sport by fishing the bowl and south end of the dam on floating lines with shrimp patterns, gold ribbed hares ear, pheasant tail nymphs and crunchers. Marlow Stones has also produced some good sport for the bank anglers with floating lines and small nymphs. With cats whiskers and suspender minkies also producing good catch rates.

Boat anglers have experienced a good week’s sport, mainly by fishing floating, intermediate, sink tip and Di3 lines with suspender minkies, humungus, sparklers,
        Grafham Water continued

GRHE, diawl bachs, crunchers and pheasant tail nymphs. The most productive areas for the boat anglers have been Savages Creek, T,G, P and K buoys, Valley Creek, Gaynes Cove and Central drifts.

David Waters of Huntingdon caught the heaviest bag of the week. David took five trout for 20lb 12oz by fishing a floating line at Savages Creek on a floating appetiser. David also shared the biggest Rainbow of the week – a superb overwintered Rainbow of 5lb 10oz with Ally Wells. Ally, in turn, shared the biggest Brown of the week with Cambridge angler Mark Searle. They both caught and released Browns of 7lb. Mark caught his Brown on a floating line from Savages Creek on a diawl bach between two boobies.

        Pitsford Water
        Fish week 472 (season 10,361) Returns 106 (2,995) Rod average 4.4 (3.4)
The ‘top of the water’ action has really taken off at Pitsford. Cooler, breezy conditions have brought fish to the surface and various methods are now accounting for many bag limits. The rod average for the week is a very healthy 4.4. The best reported catch of the week went to father and son Mick and David O’Farrell who boat fished the Narrows with dries and wet flies, taking 45 trout.

Richard Williams and Will Linnell also had a good morning fishing ‘washing line’ style to take 30 fish.

Whilst the bank fishing is still challenging due to the weed, it is possible to catch, providing you pick your spot with care. There are some good fish to be had as the fish are now around the weedbeds feeding on fry and snails.

The best boat areas are the Dam, Main Basin and across the Narrows. Bank anglers should try Duffers, Gorse and the Cliffs.

        Best Rainbow 4-5lb.

        Best Brown 4lb.

        Best methods See report.

Best boat areas The dam, Sailing Club, Main Basin, top end of Narrows.

        Ravensthorpe Reservoir
        Fish week 407 (season 6,125) Returns 62 (1,422) Rod average 6.5 (4.3)
Anglers have enjoyed another week of fantastic sport at Ravensthorpe. With the cooler, cloudy weather the fish are high up in the water.

Floating line with dries, small nymphs, diawl bachs, buzzers, wets and even lures have been catching.

Last Saturday Ben Race and his boat partner fished diawl bachs and buzzers on floating line anchored near the Dam. They caught and released 19 fish each. Mr Naylor boat fished last Wednesday, catching 34 fish.
