Fish week 675(season 24,788) Returns 176 (5,969) Rod average 3.83(4.15)
Rutland Water has been in superb form – the highlight of the week was the Lexus International team event that was fished on Friday and Saturday. A staggering 1,961 fish were caught over the two days for a rod average of 7.78. However, there are plenty more fish in the reservoir, and with the cooler, autumnal conditions prospects look excellent for both bank and boat anglers. The reservoir has been fishing exceptionally well, not only with stock fish but also some over wintered Browns and Rainbows. Tony Storey of Nottingham got to grips with an immaculate 6lb 8oz Rainbow, the best of the week, on Tuesday whilst boat fishing down the South Arm. Lyn Walters of Oakham took a fine 6lb 2oz Brown on the same day – this was the best Brown of the week.
The numerous weed beds around the shoreline are home to some of the biggest fish in the water. Tony Bevan fished with Chris Guthrie last week and the pair had a great day’s fishing catching superb Rainbows on small dries. Fry patterns are also working with the fish feeding on corixa, snails, stickle backs and fry with one Rainbow around 5½ – 6lb having a stomach full of Zebra mussels and one solitary 3 inch Roach.
Bank anglers are fishing the shoreline again with fish being taken from the peninsula (Spud Bay and Barn Hill Creek), whilst Sykes Lane has also seen fish taken.

Lexus International team event 22 & 23 August
Rio Masters had a very good start on Day One managing to hold on over the two days to win the event. Boats were spread out over the reservoir during the two days, stretching from Gibbets Gorse through to the Sailing Club, then to the fishing lodge and finally down to the corner of the Dam at Fantasy Island. Virtually all the fish were found over the deeper water, with many silvered up stock fish averaging a weight of 2lb during the event.Only a few boats sought the bigger grown on fish that are around the shallows during the event but at least two were returned around the 6lb mark after the respective anglers had killed their four fish limit. Many fish were easily returned, with the organisers adopting the rule of all flies to be de-barbed for the event. Overall top rod was Matthew Griffiths with a total bag weight of 45lb 11oz. John Hood took the best fish a 3lb 14oz Rainbow.

With more favourable winds Grafham Water is fishing well. Later in the week the south end of the Dam was in good form with one season ticket holder taking 24 fish from this area of the bank during the week. The most successful methods for bank anglers have been floating lines with shrimp patterns, GRHE, diawl bachs and olive buzzers fished along the margins of the Dam wall. Some trout have been caught along the G Bank by fishing the same method as the Dam.Boat anglers have seen fishing improve with both Sanctuary Bay and Hedge End giving the most consistent sport on a mixture of lines ranging from intermediate to Di 7’s. The most prolific flies for the boat anglers have been blobs, cat or viva boobies, cormorants and diawl bachs. There has been some good fishing at G,P and B buoys using the same methods as at the Dam.

Improve your bank fishing 8 and 23 November.Pitsford Water
Fish week 101 (season 8,939) Returns 35 (2,267) Rod average 2.8(3.9)
The improving cooler weather has seen the fishing go from strength to strength at Pitsford Water. The fish have now moved out from the deep water of the main bowl and are showing in large numbers through the Narrows.
Floating or slow intermediate lines teamed with wets or FABS and hoppers are taking huge numbers of fish with anglers reporting fast and furious sport. Pitsford regular Richard Williams had a half day boat and took 30 fish with Invictas and Soldier Palmers. Richard had several ‘double ups’ so anglers are advised to fish a minimum 8lb leader to avoid breakages.
Whilst many of the fish are said to be quite small, they are fully finned and giving a very good account of themselves making for great sport. It is worth giving the bank a try, although there has been some significant weed growth. There have been some nice 3lb plus fish taken using fry patterns around the weedbeds and areas such as Stilton, Gorse, Rigbys and the Cliffs are still weed free.

Fish week 97 (season 11,418) Returns 32(1800) Rod average 3.0(6.3)
Top of the water sport has been tremendous at Ravensthorpe. For those who enjoy fishing dries for free rising fish then Ravensthorpe is the place to go. Hoppers, bobs bits, klinkhammers and Shipmans buzzers will all score in the right conditions. Most other methods have been coming up a bit short but traditional wets or foam daddies have performed in more blustery conditions. Some anglers are also enjoying success on the reliable Pitsford Pea. This fly accounted for Jim Lea’s 5lb 10oz Rainbow and a nice silver three pounder for Gregg Hartley.
Mick O’Farrell and Ash Cooper have been out on the water this week plying their trade with good results. 16 fish came to the boat on dries and wets. Some evenings this week have been alive with quality silver fish feeding hard on hatching midges.
Mick Griffin has been on form this weekend with 10 fish for a morning’s work with claret shipmans on Saturday.
The bank fishing is becoming really quite a challenge now.
