Fish week 437(season 22,155) Returns 134 (5,345) Rod average 3.26 (4.14)
Anglers who have chosen to fish through the recent hot period have been well rewarded with many limits recorded, especially for boats.John Slavin from Houston in Renfrewshire has made Rutland Water his second home. On a recent trip John took seven limits in seven days and the best fish of the week! Fishing mainly in the Main Basin John used a variety of lines from floaters down to medium sink. John’s best fish was a 4lb 2oz Rainbow – he also returned another 34 throughout the week.
Nigel Woolnough from Oakham had a great day fishing down the South Arm on Monday 21 July, with 15 fish all taken off the top using c.d.c’s. Nigel found the fish to be feeding on floating snails. This was an all Rainbow catch with the best fish tipping the scales around to 5lb.
Elsewhere it was the Main Basin that received most of the attention after Monday due to the wind swinging round to the North East/East with the aerators proving a popular spot.
Not many boat anglers have ventured out in the sweltering heat but one or two are catching the last couple of hours of daylight.
Another 2,000 Rainbows have been stocked off the Peninsula bringing the total number of fish stocked this season to 64,000.
Although the boats are fishing well a change in wind direction from the West would benefit boats fishing down the Arms. Fly life is amazingly good with numbers of olives and tiny buzzer hatches during the day.

However, some days have been a lot better than others. When the heat hasn’t been too extreme boat anglers have enjoyed some great days’ fishing. Anglers have enjoyed some good sport at Ravensthorpe this week, with the mornings being the best time before it gets too hot. Fishing a floating line with the washing line method from a drifting boat has been the best method. A F.A.B. or boobie and red crunchers have caught most of the fish. Red diawl bachs and red or olive holographic buzzers are also working. For the second week in a row Roy Swinfield had the biggest fish of the week. This week it was a 6lb 8oz Rainbow – the best fish in a bag of 22 fish. These all came to olive or red holographic buzzers as Roy boat fished in Catwalk Corner.
The morning has also been the best time to be on the bank, with the Platforms or the Dam producing fish, floating lines with diawl bach, crunchers or nymphs fished slowly.
