        Grafham Water
Anglers enjoyed a cracking start to the new season at Grafham Water with a rod average of 5.3 and on top of this 25% of the trout taken weighed 3lb or more. The biggest fish on the day, and the winner of the New Lodge Trophy, was Lloyd Chanterell who caught a superb conditioned Rainbow of 6lb 3oz from a boat in Gaynes Cove. Lloyd took this fish on a Di7 by fishing the Roly Poly method. B Hollidge had the biggest bag on the day with 7 fish for 20lb 6oz.

Bank anglers had a superb day’s sport, mainly on the south shore due to the wind. The most popular areas were the Mander Car Park frontage, Gaynes Cove and the Seat which all produced good catch rates. The most consistent methods for the bank anglers are floating/intermediate lines with GRHE, Pitsford pea, montanas, black and olive boobies fished slow.

Boat anglers also had a great day’s sport with G Buoy, Gaynes Cove and the bowl of the Dam all producing good catch rates. The best methods are floating /medium sinking lines, GRHE, buzzers, boobies, tubes, vivas, and montanas fished slowly.

Fish week 764 Returns 69 Rod average 11
The first week of the new season has proved phenomenal with a staggering rod average of 11 fish per rod.

Fish are being caught from many areas of the water, but the hottest spot has to be the Island. Fish are running up and down the North bank and many boat anglers are reporting catches of over 50 fish.

Big fish this week fell to Lex Lees who caught and returned a lovely Rainbow of approximately 11lb in weight. Mick Griffin has been on form with his bloodworm and buzzer tactics accounting for a beautiful 7lb 7oz overwintered fish. Roger Mansell also boated a fish of 7lb 2oz which fell to a cormorant on a slow glass.

Catches of note have come to many anglers but Phil Longstaff and his boat partner managed over 50 fish on the above methods but also found black blobs very effective on a Di3.

The best methods have been black and green lures on slow sink intermediate lines, Pitsford Pea, Cormorant and cats whisker have all produced good catches. Fish can be caught on bloodworm patterns, buzzers and diawl bachs with floating lines, however, lures are proving very successful at the moment.

Mick Griffin had a pleasant surprise on Saturday when he hooked into something large. He soon realised he was playing a huge pike and managed to subdue the fish after 20 minutes. Mick brought the fish to the warden’s net on a 6lb tippet and a 7 weight rod! The fish was safely unhooked in the water and swam away strongly. This Pike was estimated at 30lb plus.

The bank has fished very well at Ravensthorpe this week and the Platforms along the west bank are best. Methods and flies are the same as the boats and many fish are being caught. Experienced angler Bob Draper has had some good fishing banking a dozen fish on a Pitsford pea.

Best boat areas Island to Coton End.

        Best bank areas Platforms 4-12.

        Pitsford Water
        Fish week 463 (season 614) Returns 67 (91) Rod average 6.9 (6.7)

“With a rod average of 6.9 for the first week of fishing at Pitsford – this is the great start to the season we expected” says Pitsford Head Warden Nathan Clayton. Rick Barlow recorded 14 Rainbows on the first day, returning three Brown trout, all on floating lines and buzzers. Season ticket holder David Brady submitted a return for 32 fish when he boat fished on Opening Day.

Spring like weather is set to continue, so anglers should be using floating lines and fish small buzzers deep and slow. In recent days lures like green and white boobies fished deep on a Di7 have taken fish. The top bank areas are Duffers Reach, Bog Bay, Cliffs and Stilton Point.

Water levels are brimming so banks are easily accessible with no need to wade. The recent bright, sunny weather has put fish down in the water, but anglers have soon worked out that sinking lines and deep fished lures like boobies will produce good bags of fish. The early bank anglers have continued to use floating lines to great effect in cloudy conditions.

Anglers please note that until 1 April all Brown trout should be returned safely to the water. The Small Half is closed to anglers until 1 April. More fish are due to be stocked soon.

Best Rainbow 5lb taken by Pete Webb of Northampton.

Best boat areas Causeway, North Farm Bay.

Best bank areas Bog Bay, Stilton Point, Gorse.
