October has always been renowned for producing some of Rutland Water’s finest fish and last week anglers took a number of quality Browns and Rainbows. Roy Rayson of Melton Mowbray, who has held a season ticket for a number of years, netted a superb personal best 9lb¼oz fish whilst boat fishing in the North Arm. This fish put up a tremendous fight over deep water.

Part time warden Mark Haycock added a 6lb 14oz Brown to his ‘list’ whilst fishing in the Autumn Pairs last Saturday. Mark took this fine fish from the Main Basin whilst fishing the Rudder section of this popular match. Another notable Brown (6lb 3¾oz) was taken by Rod Leggetter.

Season ticket holder Graham Baylis of Earl Shilton returned a Brown estimated at 7lb whilst fishing off the bank at Sykes Lane last Friday. Graham’s fish fell to a personal favourite fly for the time of year – a black tadpole on a floating line.

On the big Rainbow front, season ticket holder Steve Crowder from London, had a cracking bag of 8 fish last Wednesday, which included a 6lb 11oz Rainbow. Local guide and instructor Malcolm March from Edith Weston landed a 6lb 5oz Rainbow in superb condition whilst boat fishing in front of the Fishing Lodge in very adverse conditions last Friday, with very strong North Easterly winds, coupled with showers. In fact apart from last Thursday and Friday the weather has been very unkind and has influenced sport.

Bank fishing is still surprisingly steady. However, last week Graham Baylis had 4 or 5 Rainbows, in addition to his big Brown. Graham commented that there were good numbers of fish moving at first light last Friday around Sykes Lane.

Anglers are enjoying good sport at Grafham Water. The heaviest bag of the week was caught by boat angler Simon Lehane. Simon caught a tremendous bag of eight fish weighing 30lb 3oz from Savages Creek – his preferred method was grey/silver zonker on a slime line. The heaviest Brown of the week was a fin perfect specimen of 5lb 4oz which fell to Simon.
Boat anglers have had some good fishing over the past week with intermediate and sink tip lines with minkies, GRHE, diawl bachs and damsel nymphs all producing good catch rates. The best areas for the boat anglers have been Savages Creek, Hedge End, G Buoy, Willows, Gaynes Cove and the Seat.

Bank anglers have had even better sport than the boat anglers with most bank areas producing good catch rates. As always the Dam has been the most consistent area for bank anglers, but the Seat, G Buoy, Deep Water and Pylon Points, Hill Farm and Pig Bay have all produced good fishing when the wind has been favourable. The most productive methods for bank anglers have been floating lines with shrimp patterns, GRHRE, crunchers, diawl bachs and minkies.

        Fish week 258 (season 12,248) Returns 81 (3,626) Rod average 2.4 (3.3)
This week has seen a dramatic increase in the number of Brown trout coming out of Pitsford with the spotted beauties outnumbering the Rainbows in the catch returns. Fish are now hitting the fry in earnest as the water cools.

Trevor Heseltine had a great day taking 6 fish including 5 Browns, the best over 5lb, all returned.

Lloyd Chantrell had the biggest Brown of the week with a stunning 6lb 4oz fin perfect specimen. Mr Timlin had the best Rainbow – a lovely fish of 8lb 12oz. Most fish are coming to fry patterns fixed around the margins. However, when conditions have allowed, dries have still worked, particularly Bobs Bits and hoppers/daddies.

Pitsford Water hosted the AMFC ‘Fun Day’ match on Sunday with anglers catching 50 fish. The top boat was John Mees and Mark Haycock with 9 fish, fishing tubes on a Di7. The best Brown on the day went to Leanne Frost with a lovely 4lb 4oz fish. Anglers enjoyed a carvery meal at the Overstone Lodge following the match.

        Ravensthorpe Reservoir
        Fish week 115 (season 8,587) Returns 40 (1,814) Rod average 2.8 (4.7)
Anglers have enjoyed some good sport at Ravensthorpe this week when the weather conditions have been right. In light winds with a nice ripple on the water the fish have been up and feeding. Daddies have been the best method with hoppers, diawl bachs and minkies also catching fish, all fished on a floating line.

Grant Gibson and his boat partner had a good day catching twelve fish, all on daddies. Mr Spencer from Duston also enjoyed his day, catching 9 fish on daddies and diawl bachs.

Bank anglers have been catching fish from the dam when the wind has been right. Floating line with nymphs, buzzers or minkies have been the best method.

Pike fishing has been a bit slow this week with only a few small Pike caught up to 8lb, but with the weather getting colder the big fish may feed soon.
