        Fish week 387 (Season 26,625) Returns 134(7,340) Rod average 2.88 (3.62)

With the weather turning much colder mainly due to a brisk northerly wind rolling in, Rutland Water has seen some good sport this week with fish turning to feeding mode.

Fish have been well spread again this week and taken in open water in front of the Fishing Lodge, in the main basin along the Normanton bank, along Steep Bank, from Carrot Creek to Armley Wood and the bottom of the arms.

Lures fished in open water have been effective for fish up to 2lb. Fry patterns seem to be accounting for increasing numbers of better quality fish as the temperature drops. Fished on a floating line, floating fry have created interest. Fish have been feeding heavily on snail, perch and roach fry, sticklebacks and a scattering of corixa.

Season ticket holder Cameron Neil fished floating fry in and around the harbour to great effect landing a superb 5lb 9oz Rainbow with others to back it up. Boat angler Simon Whitehead landed a lovely 5lb 4oz Rainbow. Top Rutland guide Al Owen, continues a good season landing a 6lb 4oz specimen Brown whilst boat fishing mid week.

Bank sport has much improved at Rutland in the past week with fish being caught at the Green Bank, Old Hall, along the Normanton bank (plus the harbour) and at Steep Bank on the North shore. Shrimp patterns, floating fry and hares ear nymphs are accounting for the most fish. Mike Netherclift reported a good week with sport to his own shrimp pattern producing five fish all over 3lb.

Fry are frequenting the margins of the lake at present with fish certainly turning to them for nutrition as the weather cools. Although not always visible, weed banks are also presenting masses of food for our fish; snail, corixa and shrimp being the main targets.

The biggest fish weighed 3lb 11oz with several more over 3lb. Best methods were either fry patterns fished on floating lines or tubes fished on Di7. Bank fishing is improving daily and North Farm shore, Ash Tree Bay and No Fish Point are good areas with hares ear and shrimp patterns starting to account for good fish.

A group of five anglers fishing on our three day holiday package at Rutland and Pitsford recorded a rod average of 4.4 and enjoyed some great sport.

        Information for all anglers
An invasive species of shrimp (Dikerogammarus villosus), commonly known as DV, has been found at Pitsford Water. The presence of this species in the water does not pose any threat to human health. Water from the reservoir is treated to a very high standard before being supplied to local homes for drinking. It is important that anglers continue to follow the Check, Clean, Dry procedures in place for the preservation of our environment and sport.
