Fish week 1,392 (season 12,243) Returns319 (2,954) Rod average 4.36 (4.14)
Anglers have enjoyed another good week at Rutland Water with an overall rod average of 4.36. Good numbers of overwintered fish are still being caught in the 3-6lb bracket. However, another 6,163 fish were stocked this week.
The best Brown of the week at 6lb 11½oz fell to Joe Thirwell from Mexborough. Fred Pike from Chudleigh in Devon has fished Rutland Water regularly over a number of years. Fred used his expertise to net an arm aching 6lb 5½oz Rainbow – the best of the week. Not far behind Fred’s fish was Al Owen’s 6lb 4oz Rainbow taken earlier in the week.Tactics during the week have been varied with anglers fishing floating line with nymphs and some using the bung to good effect from both bank and boat. Various sinking lines with mini lures, blobs and cormorants have worked and rudder anglers relying on tube flies are also catching fish. One or two fish moving late in the day are coming up for adult buzzers.
The recent hot weather has not made a big impact on the number of fish being caught with fish feeding heavily on daphnia and buzzers. The water temperature remains low for the time of year at around 12-13 Celsius.

Anglers are catching best in more cloudy conditions.Boat anglers have had the best of the sport with the best method being Di7 and 8 lines with Cats Whisker, viva and orange boobies fished slow and as close to the bottom as possible. The most productive areas have been Valley Creek, Sanctuary Bay, Hedge End, Deep Water Point and the Willows. Another excellent week’s fishing at Pitsford Water with the hot weather having little impact on boat fishing. Bank fishing has been steadier with the best times being morning and evening. Fish are holding in the deeper water but have still been tempted with damsels and teams of buzzers.Competition news
On Saturday Pitsford Water hosted the Midlands heat of the Anglian Water Airflo International. 36 Anglers caught over 240 fish for a rod average of 6.7.The top team was a group of French anglers the ‘Froggies Fly Fishers’ who all caught limit bags to 24lb plus. Hanningfield Fly Fishers came second also with six 8 fish limits. Many fish were in the 4lb plus bracket, with the biggest weighing 6lb 7oz.
The winning method was midge tip lines and teams of damsels and buzzers/crunchers. The best bags came from drifting from the Holcot Arm, past the pontoon onto the causeway. Stone Barn, Pitsford Creek and the Sailing Club bank are also holding lots of fish with some being taken on slow sink and sunburst blobs.
