Fish week 867(season 32,656) Returns 216(7,593) Rod average 4.01 (4.35)Rutland Water has been in excellent form this week, hosting the English National on 19 and 20 September. Regular anglers have also enjoyed good sport with Roger Marshall of North Luffenham landing the best fish of the week a 9lb 1½oz Rainbow.
Roger’s stunning fish fell to a very old wet fly favourite a Wingless Wickham’s Fancy! Roger, who puts a lot of effort into his bank fishing said that he was fishing another area of the reservoir with only a couple of fish showing any interest so he decided to move to Stockie Bay. Fishing a white lure on the point and the Wickham’s on the dropper the fish followed his lure in and with line running out as he lifted the rod the fish turned and took the wet fly, shooting off taking all the fly line and plenty of backing at great speed.
Bank anglers are getting amongst the fish around the many weedbeds, including the Peninsula, Yellowstone, all the way through to Inmans Spinney, Spud Bay and the bank opposite the fishing lodge.
The biggest Brown of the week was caught by John Morton, boat fishing amongst the weed beds in the Old Hall. John was rewarded with a splendid 6lb 2oz specimen. Browns are showing more now with big fish being seen feeding along with this season’s stock Browns which are in magnificent condition. Please remember only one Brown is permitted per bag limit.
On Friday 12 September Rutland Water hosted the WaterAid Fly Fishing Challenge. 72 anglers took part – a mixture of novice and experienced. Fifteen members of Rutland FlyFishers helped on the day and also acted as gillies to the novice teams. It was a fantastic day with 129 fish caught for a total weight of 291lb 9oz. The total raised for WaterAid from this year’s event was just over £8,100 – enough to help transform the lives of 540 people by enabling them access to clean water and adequate sanitation.
Prospects are very good with two main options. Boat anglers who are happy to go for numbers of fish should try the open water where there are huge numbers of fish scattered around the areas of the reservoir already mentioned, though the fish are very fit, a number are very lean with very little food available in the deep water. Alternatively, both bank and boat anglers can fish the shoreline where there are many areas worth trying around the weedbeds which are home to the many thousands of fry, sticklebacks, snails and corixa. Within casting distance of these areas are some of the water’s biggest residents, a single fly approach and also the ability to be prepared to move and cover a lot of areas will give anglers the best chance of netting one of these fine specimens.

Competition news
English National 19 and 20 September
Rutland Water hosted the English National finals on 19 and 20 September with 20 anglers qualifying to represent their country next season. Boats were stretched out across the reservoir in many areas from the bottom of the South Arm all the way through to the main basin and to a lesser extent down the North Arm.Plenty of fish were caught and returned during practice including fish up to 7lb. The first of the two days of competition was the busiest with many limits taken. However, the second day was far more challenging with the wind increasing and moving slightly making limits hard to achieve. The top three rods overall – John Horsey, Bob Barden and Martin Burgess each enjoyed 100% success rate.
Most boats fished out over the deep water of the reservoir, following the same pattern as each of the three previous major matches held at Rutland recently. Methods were a mixture of lures and nymphs and dries, which sorted out some of Rutland’s bigger fish.

Fishing at Pitsford this week has been entertaining with lots of anglers reporting that the fish are in a chasing mood. Trout have been very near the surface and have been caught on a number of different methods. The favourites have been nymphs pulled behind a FAB on a washing line setup, teams of small wets and two fly dry setup using daddies and hoppers on floating lines. Graham Hutchings has been one angler taking advantage of the exciting fishing due to the large Crane Fly hatch, fishing for five days consecutively and being rewarded with some brilliant catches.Predator anglers have been finding a lot of Jacks with a few better fish amongst them. Big Perch seem to be feeding well and have been showing up in small numbers. As always with Pitsford the fish are big framed specimens that are now beginning to pack on the weight.
