Fish week 289(season 22,444) Returns 93 (5,438) Rod average 3.1 (4.12)
Boat anglers have had an excellent week on the reservoir, including many quick limits, some taken in only a few hours. The main basin saw most boats venturing around the various aerators and drifts up to the limit of fishing off the Dam itself.Generally fishing lures on various sinking lines, many of the fish caught were silvered up stock fish, around the 2lb mark and up to 3lb plus.
The few boat anglers that opted to search the South Arm shallows for specimen fish around the many weed beds were rewarded with quality Rainbows averaging 3lb up to 6lb.
Bank anglers have been thin on the ground with the hot weather though the Dam provided a few fish, and later in the week the wind turned southerly and fish were being caught off the Normanton bank.
Competition news
Tuesday Night Boat League week 13
Rich Cooper of Empingham won week 13 in convincing style with a 50 minute eight fish blitz in the main basin. Fishing around the aerators using lures on a sinking line, Richard had to sit on his hands for the next few hours, before he could go back to the lodge and weigh in. This latest win secures Rich the Boat league title with two nights of the league remaining. Mick Bennett took the best fish a 3lb 10oz Rainbow.1st Richard Cooper 8 fish for 17lb ½oz
2nd Graham Hayward 7 fish for 12lb 4oz
3rd Warren Landridge 5 fish for 11lb 14ozAnglian Water over 50’s Match 2 August
The Boils were out of bounds for this competition with a 100 metre exclusion zone around the aerators. Some anglers were a bit sceptical beforehand, but the match fished well with a very creditable rod average of 3.9, proving that there are fish to be caught elsewhere on the reservoir.During the match a few boats went down the South Arm and one down the North Arm. The remainder fished the Normanton bank and the middle of the Dam.
Doug Skins and Steve Short won the event, narrowly pushing Nigel Angus and Alan Stern into second place, with the two Keiths – Messrs Jones and Jones taking third spot. All three of these boats took the bulk of their fish from the Main Basin. However, some impressive fish were caught for those who persevered with the bottom of the South Arm.
Rutland Water continued
Ron Gent and Martin Rowson took third place with a very creditable bag of seven cracking Rainbows including the best fish of the match, a stunning 6lb 10oz Rainbow that fell to Ronnie’s rod. This big Rainbow launched itself at a white booby pulled across the top. While other fish fell to c.d.c’s, the pair frustratingly lost seven other fish.
1st Doug Skins & Steve Short 16 fish for 34lb 10¼oz
2nd Nigel Angus & Alan Stern 16 fish for 33lb 11¾oz
3rd Keith Jones & Keith Jones 16 fish for 29lb 6oz
4th Ron Gent & Martin Rowson 7 fish for 24lb 6ozDerby Fly Fishers match 2 August
Eight of the club’s anglers fished and caught 52 fish giving a rod average of 6.5 for the day.
1st Clive Wilkins 8 fish for 17lb 1½oz
2nd Ray Jeffrey 8 fish for 17lb 6oz
3rd Dave Tomlinson 8 fish for 13lb 4ozProspects look good, especially for boat fishing, with steady numbers of limits and plenty of fish being caught away from the aerators and the Main Basin – the South Arm is producing quality sport for those willing to give it a go. The North Arm is hardly seeing any pressure at all. The best areas for bank anglers will be where there is an off shore wind.
Best Rainbow 6lb 10oz taken by Ron Gent.
Best boat areas The Main Basin, aerators and drifts along the Dam. Bottom of South Arm around weed beds.
Best bank areas Sykes Lane, Dam, Carrot Creek, Barnhill Creek.

The weather conditions made the fishing challenging at Ravensthorpe last week but those up for the challenge caught well. The cloudy days were best for dries or wets, claret hoppers or klinkhammers, silver invictas for the wets. On still, bright days the buzzers fished best, black or olive on a midge tip line.
Best boat areas Main Bowl.
Best bank areas Platforms 4 and 5, Dam.
Best methods Floating lines and wets or buzzers.
Mid week boat winner Wayne McClusky of Northampton.
Pitsford Water
Fish week 89 (season 8,440) Returns 39 (2,108) Rod average 2.2 (4.0)
Anglers have enjoyed some good fishing this week with several boat anglers reporting fantastic sport. Pat Flynn has been putting his highly effective methods to the test and scoring well with 11 fish to the boat on Tuesday and an impressive catch of 29 fish on Sunday. Pat used various high density lines coupled with boobies or tubes fished over the main bowl of the reservoir. There are plenty of fish showing at the Dam end over the cooler water and they can be caught in the right weather conditions. Wets and dry flies on the drift have proved effective. Many anglers have also caught fish on the washing line with diawl bachs and crunchers. Some anglers have been using the rudder on breezy days and have bagged up in the morning.
Lure anglers fishing for trout have had more success this week and with the fish beginning to pursue fry up around the Dam, fishing with small spoons and mepps should produce results.
Some very good catches of Perch have been achieved again this week with several fish around the 3-4lb mark being fairly common on drop shot or vertical jigging techniques.
The Pitsford Tuesday Night Boat League came to a successful conclusion this week with Pete Webb taking first place overall and winning tackle vouchers. We would like to thank everyone who took part in the league which has been a very friendly, inclusive event and look forward to running this, and other events in the future.
