Fish week 614(season 23,058) Returns 175 (5,613) Rod average 3.5(4.1)
Anglers have enjoyed another excellent week on the boats at Rutland Water with plenty of fish and limits taken.Season ticket holders Ken Merridan and former warden Paul Friend had an enjoyable day down the South Arm last week with a dozen fish averaging 3lb using a washing line set up, then switching to sparkler flies later on. On the same day the best fish of the week was taken in the same area with season ticket holder Graham Pearson hooking a 6lb 1½oz Brown that fell to a stripped tube fly, on an intermediate line. Richard Cooper took the best Rainbow of the week during the Tuesday Night Boat League. This 4lb 10oz specimen was part of Richard’s winning total on the night of 8 Rainbows for 18lb 10oz.
There were good numbers of fish showing on top in the settled weather between Monday and Friday. The two main areas have again been the aerators and long drifts between Normanton Church down to Fantasy Island. The other part of the reservoir which has been producing the bigger fish has been the bottom of the South Arm shallows.
Effective methods have been a variety of coloured lure combinations in the main basin at various depths and sometimes coupled with a nymph/lure leader set up with the fish feeding on daphnia.
Most fish down the South Arm have fallen to nymphs fished on a washing line with a small booby. Some times single floating fry patterns, dries, and quickly fished tube flies have worked for one or two people. The fish in the shallows have been feeding on corixa, fry, snails, and damsel nymphs so it pays to experiment for these moving fish.
Bank fishing remains rather steady although one or two quality fish were taken off the Normanton bank, before the wind changed direction.

On the night itself Dave Knapp was a close second. The prize for best fish of the series is still up for grabs. Anglers are enjoying improved conditions at Grafham Water. Bank anglers have found the best areas to be the south end of the Dam with floating lines with shrimp patterns, GRHE, diawl bachs and olive buzzers fished along the margins of the Dam wall. Some trout have been caught along the G bank by fishing the same method as the Dam.Boat anglers have found that the fishing has improved over the past week with the south Dam giving the most consistent sport on a mixture of lines from intermediate to Di7’s. The most prolific flies for the boat anglers have been blobs, cat or viva boobies, cormorants and diawl bachs. There have also been fish caught at P and B buoys by using the same methods as at the Dam.

Anglers who have fished the right methods have enjoyed some terrific sport at Pitsford Water. A Scottish party of Messrs McGee, Menzies and Clarke fished the water on Wednesday and boated over 50 fish with Steve Clarke taking 25 fish. They fished FABS and crunchers on slow sink lines in the Main Bowl.Pat Flynn and Brian Coleman had 18 fish, taken on intermediate lines with small cats whiskers. The pair also caught two superb Brown Trout around the 5lb mark – both of which were returned.
Anglers are catching trout in the top four feet of water, slow intermediate lines teamed with a blob and nymph combination. Alternatively if overcast try pulling wets or even dries. The best boat areas are the main bowl, dam and boils. Bank anglers should try Gorse, Cliffs and Stilton, but should be aware of weed in some areas.
The lure fishing has started to produce for those targeting trout. Whilst anglers targeting Perch have reported some great sport with lots of fish in the 2-3lb weight bracket.
