It’s been an excellent week for big fish at Rutland Water. The best Rainbow of the season fell to Gordon Anthony of Whittlesey, Peterborough, on Saturday 29 October. The fish took the scales round to 7lb 13 3/8oz and fell to an orange lure fished on a floating line from the Normanton shore.

Paul Gilbert from Billinghay, Lincolnshire caught four fish for 17lb 5 ¾oz whilst boat fishing in the South Arm, the best fish was a 5lb 8¾oz Brown. Paul also recorded a 5lb 2oz Rainbow. The successful tactics were fry patterns with a nymph on a dropper.

Mike Barret and Graham Pearson weighed in 16 fish for 46lb 12¾oz taking their fish from the North Arm with the majority of their catch falling to tubes fished on a Di5 line. One of our junior anglers, Graham Hayward is continuing his good form and took three fish including a 4lb 10oz Rainbow from the Fantasy area of the Normanton bank.

Ted Batty fished the Lincolnshire Police end of season get together on Wednesday 26 October and weighed in two fine Rainbows for 10lb 4oz.

Many anglers are weighing in fish around the 4-5lb mark with minkies, floating fry and nymphs accounting for a lot of them. The best areas to fish are the weed beds in the North Arm, Barnhill, Spud Bay, Hinmans and Yellowstone. The south end of the dam is also producing some very good bags.

Bank angler Alan Nichols fished the Gravel Bank at Pitsford Water and tied on something meaty for the time of year – a minky booby! He certainly made the right choice as he landed a Rainbow of 8lb 8oz – the best fish of the week.

Boat anglers are taking a few fish on the rudder and other drifting methods. Although numbers of fish are slowly reducing the quality gets better. We still have a few places left to fish in Pitsford Water’s Fur and Feather on 13 November. This is a popular event fished from the boat.

        Ravensthorpe Resevoir
        Fish week 93 (season 11,564) Returns 31 (2,685) Rod average 3.0 (4.3)
With the continuing mild weather fish have been active in the top two feet of water and there have been reports of some surface sport to dries and traditional wet fly fishing. However, a number of anglers have chosen to fish with slow sinking lines and lures (minkies etc) and have had some cracking sport with excellent conditioned fish in the 2-4lb range. We have been told of anglers losing big fish due to them running through the weedbeds and snapping leaders. A good piece of advice is to use at least 8lb B.S leader material and only fish one fly, especially when lure fishing.

Regular Ravensthorpe angler Doug Whibley caught and released a fine Brown of at least 4½lb which took a size 12 Dunkeld on a floating line while fishing a team of traditional flies.

The Brown trout season has now ended and all Browns need to be returned safely to the water.

        November reductions
Half Day permits (1 fish) will be valid all day from 1 November until 31 December £16.

The allurement was far added acknowledged than electric-fishing methods or netting. It was originally an bearding arrangement sometimes alleged the ‘grayling lure’, or artlessly ‘bug’. It was bearding because no appreciative book beck fisherman would anytime stoop so low as to advisedly angle for grayling – this was the 1930s.
