Report on Redditch Federation/AVVC Open angling match on Arrow Valley Lake, Redditch on 27.10.12.
Following the first real frost of the winter and affected by a stiff northerly wind on the day, catches were lower than of late but some reasonable bags of skimmer bream were still taken by the 33 anglers taking part.
Anglers pegged on the Bluebell bank area of the lake fared best with four of the top five weights coming from that area.
Top spot went to Joe Roberts, the current veteran’s world champion, who fished a tidy match in the difficult conditions to take a 29lb 15oz bag of skimmers up to about the twelve ounce mark. Joe caught on long pole with mainly maggot hook bait despite being hampered by the strong wind blowing directly into his face on permanent peg number 63.
Redditch angler Steve Reynolds took second place with a 26lb 6oz return, Steve also found maggot to be the best bait and fished in similar style to the winner from peg 66.
Another Redditch man, Keith Woodhead was third with 24lb taken on a small swimfeeder rig cast to about the 20 metre mark, once again maggot doing the damage.
Over on the playground bank Simon Chidler fished really well to take fourth place with 23lb 14oz from peg one, ahead of John Walkden with 21lb 14oz back over on the Bluebell bank.
