coopsParticipantWas wondering if anyone could give me some info?
As I’ve got a match up there in June and have never seen the place
methods, rigs and baits would be good.
Many thanks

TF_Nigel.Hi Coops.
Barston is 25 acres, and mostly 4 foot deep. One corner does drop to 14 feet, but rarely pegged.
Fish are F1s from 8oz to 2lb, skimmers around 1 1/2 lb, Perch and roach to a pound, and then bigger carp from 10 to 20lb.
Main target fish are the F1s and big skimmers, and big carp is a bonus.
Fish 2 lines, one at 13m, and a feeder line. The feeder line is best this week, as its gone cold, the fish have moved out, The method is good, but yesterday i lost 10 before switching to a feeder and losing none! The method feeder, both elastic and in line, was bouncing the fish off, being up to 2lb, was just wrong. If i had been getting bigger carp, then it would work well.
The pole line the last 2 weeks has been hard due to the cold snap, but by June it will be good.
Feed a ball of fishmeal and a few pellets, and fish the feeder for an hour. If the feeder works stay on it.
If its the Garbolino final, it may be 2 matches, not confirmed yet, then it may be 3 hours on the pole, then 3 on the tip.
If its pole first, then dont fill it in, fish a 4mm expander on a 18 or 16 hook, to a .16 bottom in case you hook a lump. Lots of colour in the water, so 0.16 is fine. Floats need to be from .4 to gram, if its towing you need a gram.
Feeder or method, 10mm red boliy works for carp, 2 red maggots work for carp, F1s and skimmers. Fish 0.16 bottom again, but get ready to unclip if a lump takes it! Dont fish too close, or it will break you before you unclip, 40 to 50 turns is good, but a BIG chuck also works!
Good luck, Nigel. -

TF_nickswolvesThats what I call a good reply! Hope you don’t mind me hijacking on thread….I would like to give Barston a try in next month or so – are there always matches on Sat/Suns or can you get on ok for a pleasure session? Which pegs are good for sport generally if turning up for first time?

No worries coops, it will change as it warms up. water today is 12 degrees, it could be 20 in a month!
Nick, i dont run matches, i want to be fishing myself at weekends! I do run 2 a year, the Barston Bowl and a Xmas match.
Clubs most weeks, all on the right bank, and Carp and pleasure fishing on the left (road) bank.
Some dates the lake is fully booked, check on the website foe those days.

doddy65ParticipantNigel,
Are Drennan using Barston again this year for the Tightlines Young Angler Day? My lad won back in September but as yet has not been contacted regarding the date for this years day. Any chance you could shed any light on this still waiting to book holiday and don’t want it to clash and he misses out.
Cheers Doddy
