The type of kit that anyone will suggest will depend on a few things.

What style of fishing does he want to get back into.

River, canal, lake. Silver fish, Carp, Specimen?

If all rounder then a decent rod and line combo could be bought for around £70.

If he wants to get into pole fishing on commercial waters then a good secondhand pole plus a few bits of kit could be got for around £100.

Specci fishing or bivvi style carping might set you back a few more quid £200 would get you set up.

Best check out magazines such as Improve your Coarse Fishing or Total coarse fishing and set your budget accordingly.

Getting started can be a minefield if you take too much advice from Match fishing fanatics as they all tend to ‘need’ everything ever made for fishing!!!

thanks cutnut… he said he’s just looking to get into river and lake fishing..

so.. as I know nothing about this particular sport ….does river and lake fishing define the same type of kit ? (((( ps… fishing for me was trout fishing back where I grew up in the states.. never heard of “coarse” till about an hour ago ))))

get ya sen a chair, a decent float rod and a decent reel, there the main things in my opinion, call at ya local tackle dealer and tell them what ya after doing and they will sort ya the gear out. it takes years to build the gear up, theres no point trying to buy it all in 1 go it will cost u a fortune.
