Beginner fly fishing help

I am looking to take up fly-fishing but I am really struggling to string together what equipment I really need. I went into a fishing shop recently and asked a staff member to sort me out with a beginners kit but it smelt a bit fishy (excuse the pun), as I thought he was trying to make money out of my naivety. Can anyone give me an honest idea of what I really need to get – just to get me started?

I would like to get the ball rolling on this thread. So I have had a browse for fly-fishing sets and only found a few that caught my eye. One especially, but I am still unsure whether it has all I need. Can someone please let me know their opinion of this fly fishing starter kit?
