Rutland Water
Fish week 2,365 (season 18,872) returns 566 (3,979) rod average 4.17 (4.74)Anglers are enjoying outstanding sport at Rutland Water with quality fish being taken including the season’s best Rainbow. Leicester angler Paul Barker’s 9lb 3oz superb over wintered Rainbow was the best fish of the week and the best of the season so far. Paul fished the bottom of the South Arm last Thursday and took this specimen on a black buzzer with red cheeks. The best Brown of the week fell to John Glanfield from Exeter in Devon. John has been visiting Rutland since it opened and has fond memories of the very first morning in 1977. In the past 22 years he has caught fish in almost all areas. This year’s catch return included a lovely 6lb 8oz Brown from the bank at the sailing club using a green buzzer on a floating line to great effect.
Another holiday angler Glyn Jones from llanrwst in North Wales had a tremendous week off the bank. On five days Glyn recorded limits of eight Rainbows and five fish on his other day. Every fish weighed over 2lb with 8 over 3lb, the best at 3lb 12oz.
Fly activity has been varied with buzzer hatches easing on some days then frequent on others. Olives have continued hatching in good numbers. A few Mayfly were witnessed in Barnsdale Creek and the Sailing Club. Fish are also feeding hard on snails and corixa in some areas and bits of daphnia are also showing up. Sedge are starting to hatch off with this season’s pin fry around in most areas. Prospects are very good with an ample supply of variable food and plenty of sport in settled conditions with nymphs and dry fly is almost guaranteed.

fish week 759 (season 9,240) returns 248 (2,414) rod average 3.06 (3.82)The biggest bag of the week was caught by Gary Barstow of Towcester. Gary caught 8 trout for 20lb 12oz from Savages Creek and G buoy by fishing a Di 5 with diawl bachs and blobs. The biggest trout caught this week was taken by Chris Whitford from Watford. Chris caught a superb over wintered Brown of 5lb 10oz from Gaynes Cove on an intermediate line with a white and yellow gold head lure.
Fishing at Grafham Water has benefitted from the settled weather conditions this week. Boat anglers have once again had the cream of the sport with plenty of anglers catching good bags of fish mainly from the north shore and the sludge bank. The best method for the boat anglers has been the washing line with a blob on the top dropper followed by a diawl bach or cruncher and an orange blob on the point fished at a gentle pace. Boat hot spots have been G and Q buoys, Hedge End, Hill Farm, Savages Creek and the Willows.
Bank anglers have found the fishing a little more challenging but with the recent north easterly winds
