          Let’s try that again.

          Preface – I don’t actually own a boat yet.

It seems to me that most folks seem pretty happy to share info about shore marks but, I get the impression, less keen to divulge info as to where’s best when afloat.

Is there any particular reason for this, other than fear of commercials moving in and scraping everything up?

I think your right its mainly to keep the commercials at bay. You may have noticed that charter skippers who share information frequently hop channels or say I’ll ring you and then get on the mobile to discuss catches and position.
Even anchor positions on wrecks are jealously guarded.
I even heard a story about an angler being banned from a charter boat for taking a hand held GPS on board to crib marks.

Sure. When it comes to inshore waters and the sorts of marks people are likely to fish with a mate in a privately owned dinghy though, it seems that the same code seems to apply. Witness the catch reports in the mags featuring pictures of fish taken from small boats from “undisclosed mark in the Solent” etc.

Surely less people have access to a private boat than have access to a car (and therefore any shore mark) so it just seems a bit odd.

With modern mobile phone nowadays, you can have a GPS in your phone.

Boat Fishing Monthly Magazine has started a series that gives out GPS numbers for well-known inshore marks!

£3.20 mate, which isn’t bad for two sets of GPS numbers each month! Lol.
