Bogus Fisheries Officer operating in Southampton!
On 10/04/2013 14:59 a local Angler was confronted at Miller’s Pond in Sholing, Southampton, by an individual wearing a fluorescent jacket, black coat, jeans, and boots. He was in his mid 30s, around 5’11” to 6′ in height and had a slim build. He had a foreign accent and no visible vehicle.
The individual presented a laminated card with a foreign name with the Environment Agency logo on. The angler did not catch the imposter’s full name.
First, the individual asked to see the angler’s licence, who didn’t have it on him as he wasn’t fishing – he had a bait box with him, but was just checking out the pond for a later fishing trip.
Individual said the angler had to have licence with him if he passed near any water while carrying any fishing equipment, including the bait box.
Was told it would be a £3.50 fine for first time he failed to produce a licence and that the police would be called for repeat offences.
The Angler realised that that was not standard procedure and left the scene. He followed the advice on the Environment Agency Facebook’s page advising people to contact our Incident Hotline when this happens – 0800 807060. The Police were also informed.
Today, 16/04/2013, Agency Fisheries Officers talked to two anglers at Millers Pond, who reported that the bogus impersonator is still at large and operating in Southampton.
Local anglers say that this week the same person has been seen at Southampton Common Pond and may be specifically targeting the Council owned waters – Ice-House Pond, Millers Pond, Southampton Common Ponds and Man’sbridge Reservoir. All in Southampton.
The police know and will step-up their presence, as will my Fisheries Officers.
If you are approached by anyone claiming to be a Fisheries Officer, ask to see their ID. They will be dressed in standard Agency-branded clothing, including handcuffs and a stab-vest – see picture. They will not ask for on-the-spot fines.

Please call the Environment Agency immediately if you are approached by anyone claiming to be a Fisheries Officer but who you suspect is bogus.

It’s a very brave man who would single-handedly try to impose fines on the locals at places like Millers and Ice House. LOL. I’ve done coaching days at most of the public Southampton waters and it’s fair to say that even the milkfloats have rear-gunners !
