TF_GLEBE1My first impression when i saw this was what a prat, even if it is only waist deep there could be over a foot of silt or soft bottom, add the fact hes got all those layers on and a pair of skeetex.
If he goes in there’s no way he’s getting out on his own~naughty -

TF_Nigel.It was 3 feet deep. ~clap
We know the pegs well, so no danger.
He only broke the surface anyway, not right though, then finished the rest off from the bank with an ice breaker. -

TF_sumoHope he’s in the AT he’ll need the public liability insurance if he falls through. On a serious point Nigel and not having a pop mate , would you allow that on your lake and what responsibility do you think you would have under H&S law if he fell through ? As I say not having a pop just interested on your views as a lake owner etc
-
18/01/2010 at 9:15 pm #89594
TF_Nigel.If anyone was on my lake, 4 yards from the bank in 3 foot of water i would be fine with it.
The far end though is 14 feet deep, and the kids were playing on it last week because i was told about it, that is rather more dangerous and i would certanly tell anybody to get off.The ice skating on TV this week from Cambridge, was in a flooded field, 6 inches deep and 4 inch of ice!
It depends on the depth as to weather its dangerous or not!!!!!~think ~think ~think

18/01/2010 at 10:15 pm #89602
TF_FordyNige what would happen if the ice broke, the bloke on it fell in – and someone went to help (as most of us would!) then they got into serious trouble?
-

Peter1984Come on guys, give Nigel a break. Blimey he wasnt the one walking on ice.
A little unfair asking him If? and What? dont you think. Ask yourselves the same questions and put yourself in the position you are putting Nigel.

TF_carpkid1ParticipantNot everyone is going to know how dangerous it is ~naughty
Nigel is stateing on this thread that it aint dangerous to walk on ice just because it’s only a couple foot deep ~sick
What if a youngster who wants to get into fishing, but cant at moment cause of all ice on water, is reading this thread.
Dont worry, go ahead, afterall nigel said theres only 3 foot of water and probly a foot of silt, not going to do any harm is it if you fall In this weather. ((((I AM BEING SARCASTIC)))
What ever that angler does on a match is his problem, he wants risk his life and other around him just for a days fishing go ahead.
But posting and picture up of him doing it and saying it’s not dangerous on a website the whole world can see is just pure stupid in my book!
-
19/01/2010 at 12:01 pm #89669
TF_missabiteWell said carpkid1.
Reading through the thread all I could think is why on earth would someone want to post a picture of someone stood on the ice on a forum which is no doubt read by youngsters. Very poor form.
Then I came to your post which sums it up nicely.
-
19/01/2010 at 1:01 pm #89678
TF_MarkTIt’s upto the guy to walk on the ice, his life. Can’t believe your slating someone for a putting a picture up omg got a grip.

TF_bigoldbigbuttParticipantit might be up to them, but if they do go thru the ice, it`s up to others to get them out.

TF_wightangleri see the ‘hypocrites’ are out in force again today- suppose we better make posts carry an ‘adult only’ or after the nine o’clock watershed before posting!!
Blimey -all the those blokes saving fish reported in AT- hang em!!
obviously well known and popular SPONSORED skilful angler Karl Webster who did a community minded act of kindness
and fish welfare a favour by him and his mates generous and unselfish actions should be bought to account !!
No doubt some on here would have their pay docked and sponsor ‘informed’ about this disgraceful waste of taxpayers money and emergency services call centre’s valuable time!By the way, the bloke cutting the ice with a chainsaw was apperently earning his professional living as a bloodworm collector!

20/01/2010 at 11:59 pm #90063
pipikinsDoes the fishery’s public liability insurance cover them for allowing anglers to walk onto the ice? I suspect serious questions would be asked if, say, the ice went, the guy slipped, knocked himself out and slid under the 4″ thick ice beyond reach of fellow anglers…. it could happen. When ice breaks with weight on it, it doesn’t just gently sink vertically with the weight on top.. it slides!

TF_gloves007ukfellas right!!!
this is how it goes from my viewif the fella wants to walk on the ice so be it its his choice
like it’s mine to join the british army everyone makes their own choice let them get on with it
if the water was 3 foot deep and my mate was on it i would take a photo as well
nigel posted a simple photo on here (i am missing the picture all you lot do gooders that have never done any thing wrong in your lifes and just sit and have a go and others ?just think this is now starting to turn into a witch hunt and some of you need to get out more !!!
AS NIGEL SAID IT WAS 3 FOOT OF WATER NOT ENOUGHT TO WET YOUR BALL SACK!)

TF_FordySorry chaps
Can we just have a slight reality check here and stop all the bitching!! It’s the kind of response to a thread that gives this site a bad name.
It’s all very well saying:”Yeah you muppets – the water’s only 3′ deep.”
Says who? So there are no holes deeper than that then? Maybe there aren’t. Maybe there are. How and when would you like to find that out?
I’m very anti over-cautious health and safety. I’m also anti-stupidity.
Walking out onto ice to cut it to fish, unless it’s a metre thick, is stupid.
In Norway (where it’s proper cold) I’m told you are not allowed to skate on frozen lakes unless it’s a metre thick. They know more about ice than we do.
Yes if someone falls in through the ice, they only have themselves to blame. Ask yourself what’s going to happen if they can’t get out on their own. Or a kid sees them doing it and follows the example – then the worst happens (even in 3′ of water).
Would you want to be involved in explaining that to the child’s parents?
”Really sorry – but we thought it was only 3′ deep.”
(Sorry gloves – for the life of me, I can’t see a connection with your selfless decision to protect your country and a decision to walk out onto ice to go fishing.”)

Has anyone else noticed that this site is about the only one that receives this type of thread, and therefore is about the only site that discusses these issues, which often evolves into heated debate (which some users can’t handle)? This in my view is what a discussion forum is all about ~think
