      TF_Nigel.

Fed up with slow AOL. My speed is 200 most of the time. 2000 very rarely in the daytime (when we are at work).
        I need to change.
I am 2 miles from the exchange, and my BB checker says i should be able to get 2.5k

Can i access my AOL email if i change?

I dont understand how the deals work, why are some deals free, and some up to £50 a month?
All i need is unlimited internet, i dont download, and dont want free calls or TV, i would like free BT line if possible.

        Can anyone help please?~think

Not sure on the broadband side of it Nigel. But if you get rid of AOL as your provider you can keep your email at a cost of £5 per month ( well it was a couple of years ago).

nigel it wont cost you a penny to keep ya email, also depending on how clean and virus spyware free it is may have something to do with slow speeds, try running all ya checks and defrags 1st mate.

if you want free internet talk talk is the best i think, but it cost to set it up,as for the free bt line dont think ya going to get 1.

If you cannot get Virgin cable broadband, Nigel, and you are restricted to DSL then your phone line will be the limiting factor to the speeds you are getting. As you are 2 miles from the exchange, you will get fluctuating connection speeds regardless. Optimum speeds come within 1.5km of an exchange. All of the speed tests that the ISP’s offer before signing up to them are estimated to optimal conditions and perfect internal wiring, etc.
Changing from one DSL company to another will not automatically give you better speeds unfortunately unless you are changing to one that has their own equipment at the exchange/LLU.

If you want to change from AOL (and I always recommend it due to their policy’s and software), the best two main DSL companies are O2 and (I hate to say it) SKY. You still need to pay for the BT line rental unfortunately.

Whatever you do don’t get sky connect. (used to be the £17 a month package) They restrict your speed during peak hours to less than 512kbps.

If it is sky ensure it’s their own equipment in the exchange.

Nige you can keep your e-mail address if you change your Service Provider by just logging in as normal but on the AOL website. Just changed recently so it does work.

I can remember back in the dial up days and before I moved to Denmark, I tried AOL for a day or two and I had to do a complete reformat of my system just to get rid of the software they made me install just to have the privilege of the crap service…

Is that still the case with some resource heavy software?

                      Thanks all.
I have asked for my MAC code, and ordered BT.
AOL blame BT all the time for my slow speed, and i dont want the same problem woth another, so if i go to Bt i cant get that problem.

AOL blame everything except them selves, i have had a new BT line, new PC, new modem, new cables and even new filters after AOl kept blaming anything they could think off!

                      Lets hope this works!

One of the problems with these cheap ISP’s is they used shared lines so at peak times things tend to slow down a bit,

It that old, you get what you pay for scenario

Im with talk talk its free and its works ok, but when there is a problem I get the pleasure of speaking to an indian robot in Mumbai, who has scripted answers to the problem, and rarely solves anything.

BT might be expensive but its usually a dedicated supply and if the say 4meg it typically is, I wished i had never switched

Thats what i have had today, Indians trying to get me MAC code.
They ALLWAYS blame BT, and i didnt want the same to happen again, i am glad you told me Talk Talk is also in India, i have made the correct choice!

change to sky, it’s free or £7.50 per month, contantly rated highly then you can copy your contacts from your AOL straight into your sky email then just send an email around saying this is your new address
