      TF_Nigel.

I had a chat with Bruno yesterday regarding the ice.
This is the longest i have seen ice on the lakes in 20 years keeping fish.
I said, Hi Bruno its Nigel, and he said, yes break it, lol.
I had done mine anyway, i was calling regarding other PFCA members fisheries, and to get him to pass his advice on to them.

He knew the question, he has been asked it many times this week. there has been different thoughts from differant people regading breaking the ice.
He said for a week or even two its not a problem, but now we are into three weeks, it is now becoming a problem.
He suggested it was like having a jam jar with a gold fish in it, and with the lid on, the fish will fine for a while, but eventualy run out of oxegen.
Also, now the ice has snow on top, the water now has no light, making the problem even worse.
low stocking and deep lakes are not as bad as high stocking, or shallow lakes, or lakes with silt as i said the other day.

I am lucky that i have a JCB, and it only took me an hour to break 2 dozen holes around the lake. About 7 meters by 7 meters is what i can reach, so they are big holes.
I have other pools, some with fry in, and have also broke them, and the match pool, but the other ponds on the golf course i cant get to, but there are not many fish in them anyway.

It would be very hard without the digger.

some other holes on the golf course that you can’t get too……in a digger…you must be joking.

Just let the golfers know that you have made things interesting by creating a bit of rough down the middle of the fairway.

Nigel, always good to get advice but why did you bother asking that old DJ who used to present Tight Lines years ago ? Rock and Roll ! ~sick

Makes sense. What would you prefer? A slight concussion for a couple of hours or to slowly suffocate – not much of a choice really.

For fishery owners there isn’t a choice at all it is their lively-hood at risk. I am pretty sure that insurance wouldn’t cover loss of stock and even if it did they probably wouldn’t pay up unless some attempt to clear the ice had been made.

For fish keepers, the fish will rise to towards the lower surface of the ice trying to gasp at the surface as they do in the summer on occasions and if you see this then it is definitely time to break the ice.

I hope you consider a mini digger for marsh pool nige. Your local boys used to play move the biggy to there. Are they still at it?
