date has nothing to do with it as it was reported in another paper the week before and also in a couple of the tabloids on Thursday as well (and those have stated which of the stories they printed were jokes and this was not one of them).
It actually does happen with that species of fish in they jump out of the water as a defensive action when they feel a boat coming through.
