TF_MICK THE BOOKIE~shh ~shh ~shh ~shh.As the information from home and Ireland is filtering through,i was wondering if any of you have any 3 star naps for the oncoming festival.
Personally i am just waiting for the weights to be confirmed, and the money back “run or not” Ante post market, before i bet in ernest.Rest assured i will be giving you my selections in the very near future for those who are interested, and hope to give you all some help in finding the winners at this years prestige meeting.
There are some very good judges of horse flesh on this site, and i know they will all do their very best to put the “folding stuff” into your pockets.
BRING IT ON AND THE BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE. ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap -

glen worthingtonParticipantMick are we having a little naps and points thing like last year ?
be a bit of fun if everybody posts on here say by 11 ish on the morning.Points equate to sp’s and places ie 20/1 finishes 3rd in handicap you get a quater of the odds 5/1 = 5 points.Easy enough for everybody to work out their own points ? -

TF_DodgeNice one Mick ~clap ~clap
The Cheltenham Fstival certainly does it for me lol …… simply awesome stuff ~clap ~clap
I have managed to get Cheltenham week off work …. cant wait !
Dunguib absolutely destroyed the NH Flat opposition at the festival last year …… think he is first up in the triumph hurdle ?
Surely Paul Nicholls / Ruby Walsh are the team to be on all Festival ?
~clap ~clap
-
26/02/2010 at 4:11 pm #96101
TF_kev34The triumph hurdle is for 4yr olds and dunguib is a 7 yr old so he won`t be eligible for that race, his main aim has always been the Supreme Novice hurdle…..
Rite of passage is my E/W horse in whatever race he runs which will probably be against Dunguib….
Im there on Tuesday and can`t wait to fill my boots with Guinness.
Have to agree nicholls/walsh gonna be hard to beat….

TF_KatarinoSee my post on the other thread Mick.
Palypso de Creek is a very big price in the William Hill considering his profile and run against Our vic at Haydock and Voler la Vedette is my Tuesday nap.
I’ll post anything interesting I hear at the Monday night Plough Inn preview up by Jonjo’s.

TF_caster robParticipantThanks, I hadn’t looked closely at the hurdle flight in the picture.

Unless you’d backed Wayward Lad and weren’t too enamoured of the mare’s allowance!

TF_kev34Golden cygnet theres a blast from the past……
Think he would have beat sea pigeon/night nurse that day quite easily…..
-
10/03/2010 at 10:05 pm #97982
TF_caster robParticipantGood call on Golden Cygnet Roy.
Started me off thinking about some of the greats that were lost early.
One Man and Bright Highway spring to mind.
-
10/03/2010 at 10:07 pm #97984
TF_KatarinoThe Irish boys say Eddie O’Grady still says he was ‘probably’ the best he ever had. We’ll never know but I’m with you, he looked to be running over Sea Pigeon when he came down. I try not to watch that one too often though.
-
10/03/2010 at 10:08 pm #97985
TF_caster robParticipantRemember being there when Sea Pigeon finally beat Monksfield and Silver Buck beat Bregawn in the Cup. I think night nurse was favourite that day.
-
10/03/2010 at 10:12 pm #97986
TF_KatarinoWould he have beaten Monksfield over the old course though? He always struck me as a Wayward Lad, he stayed so far and no further to the yard. Shorten the course by 200yds and he got home, leave it as it was and he’d get ground down in last 100 yds.
-
10/03/2010 at 10:17 pm #97989
TF_caster robParticipantProbably right about Pigeon, tended to come up a touch short.
Not so sure about WLad, I remember Francome saying, after winning the King George I think, that all he did was stay and they’d been riding him for a turn of foot. Nevertheless, one of the best jumpers I’ve ever seen.
Watching some of the greats from the past really makes the old flesh tingle I must say.
-
10/03/2010 at 10:17 pm #97990
TF_kev34Of all the horses that have died on the course the one that i remember most as a young lad was Alverton in the National…..I had my first bet on him in the Gold cup when he beat Tied cottage(he fell)….
I was 12 lol
-
10/03/2010 at 10:20 pm #97991
TF_caster robParticipantI remeber jonjo rode Alverton and attracted a bit of controversy at the time.
I was at Cheltenham when Tied Cottage won his Gold Cup in a snow-storm but lost it months later on some technicallity (blood test?).
-
10/03/2010 at 10:22 pm #97992
TF_KatarinoThe snow storm was the Alverton year Rob, Tied Cottage ‘won’ it in bright sunshine. Lost it due to failed drug sample traced to contaminated feed (I know, that old excuse… but probably true in that case)
-
10/03/2010 at 10:23 pm #97993
TF_kev34Fav jockey was steve smith eccles……..
He was a rogue lol,and See you then was my favourite horse at the time, except when he got beat at Aintree….
Im sure a woman jockey beat him as well lol
-
10/03/2010 at 10:25 pm #97994
TF_caster robParticipantYou’ve obviously heard the tale of Smith-Eccles being locked out of his hotel and kipping in the back of his car at Aintree.
The story goes he woke up as some scally was making off with it along the mway and scared the crap out of him.
Sounds about right.

TF_DodgeYepp One Man ~clap ~clap ~clap broke my heart when died in his prime.
Martin Pipes Carvills Hill another superstar cutdown in his prime ….. badly injured when Mrs Pitman infamously had one of her horses stop him jumping …… ~naughty ~naughty

TF_KatarinoThere are some worse Ecky stories than that but can’t post them here 😉
Used to drink with him after racing in the dingy bar that was behind Newburys’ old stand. Always good company and knew that Cheltenham is one of the few courses where going round the inner isn’t the best option. They hit that level ground at the top of the hill on the far side, at least 2 of the leaders will start to struggle and next thing everyone on the inner is being carted backwards. Ecky NEVER went round inner in Cheltenham hurdles.

TF_Katarino*Blush*
Dodge, the year One Man won his King George run at Sandown, I was there. What most people saw was him sweeping clear and annihalating his field, what I saw was a horse stopping like he’d been shot in the final 100yds. Myself and another racing pal agreed he wouldn’t get Gold Cup trip and laid One Man to a 4 figure sum to aquantances who thought he was a certainty. 3 out we were sweating cobs but then Imperial Call swept clear and the rest is history. Good Week 😉

TF_KatarinoThanks to you lot I’ve spent a magic few hours on youtube….. but it just struck me that as lovers of your racing you could do worse than get hold of a copy of Jamie Reids book, “Days Like These”. Probably the best ever book by a non professional racing fanatic. It’s a reflection of how I came to love it so much, albeit a few years behind him, but the whole story of going to 70’s Grammar schools and being attracted to the ‘sin’ of gambling is beautifully captured along with the attraction of the Festival.
He does slightly gloss over a few facts, presumably to protect the guilty. The attempted stag do Haydock betting coup with Mel Smith was actually foiled by a Nicholson not Pipe trained runner. Also, there is a bit more to the 1987 blizzard Gold Cup Arkle Bar strippers story than he lets on but aside from minor gripes if you can get a copy it’s a fabulous read, enjoy!

TF_MICK THE BOOKIESteve Smith Eccles…..Will never forget the night we had a late evening meal at the Victoria Casino on the Edgeware road.My mate and i sat with Ecky and the Legendry Barney Curly plotting a coup on a “Nag” that was an out and out dodge, but had a little talent.
The night was brilliant, and ended in a sleazy hotel room with a couple of “women off the the night”….Minus the “Monk” of course….lol. ~shh ~shh ~shh ~shh -

TF_caster robParticipantStop it Roy.
I’ve been trying to convince myself that Khyber Kim is value in the Champion and I’m even romanticising about Whaley-Cohen’s Long Run in the RSA, a race I don’t like to bet on.
Gonna be a long week!
-
12/03/2010 at 3:01 am #98164
TF_Katarinosorry Rob but it get’s me that way 😉 It took me a long time to start spotting the obvious “non obvious” winners (Old Bridge and Ninetieth Minute for example).
Long Run will win if it stands up, much as I hate ‘rich kid’ wanabee jockeys Sam is ok.
Khyber Kim is a funny one (I always thought he was a bit of a dog) but have a look at the Boxing Day times. Go Native and Kauto ran -9 seconds standard, look at the rest of the races, it’s good form.

London WaspI have to say I’m a devotee of the ‘Flat’ but in saying that I reckon you must be dead if this festival doesn’t create some kind of enthusiasm.
13:30 At odds-on Dunguid is passed over (not a fluent jumper etc) Oscar Whisky.
14:05 Sports Line.
14:40 Ogee.
15:20 Zaynar although I have been quite taken with Khyber Kim this season since leaving Nickys’ yard and he goes well fresh!
Lets face it you only have to find one or two at this meeting and you are quids in!…….. if only it were that simple.
Enjoy and to those having a serious punt good luck. -
15/03/2010 at 11:29 pm #98701
TF_KatarinoBeen up the Plough tonight and also been chatting to someone who went to another preview couple of weeks ago.
All the jockeys rate Dunguib a cert.
Ground had dried in Somersbys favour but he may need further.
The Package looks a good thing in the william hill.
No one has any real clue in the Champion Hurdle, take your pick.
Voler la Vedette has been backed off boards in last and should go in.
Rite of Passage is very short for Wednesday and Carberry said leave it. The one they all seem to rate is Peddlers Cross.
Carberry again on the bumper: Elegant Concorde is a light flat bred type horse and they rarely win it. Opinion of the Irish contacts is it’s between Drumbaloo, Shot from the Hip and Hidden Universe (Welds 2nd string). Follow the money on the day.
Finally, Warren Marston had been talking to Milton Harris who buys a lot of Nicholls rejects. He asked Nicholls for his absolute banker of the meeting and the response was……. Poquelin
For myself I’ll say again I think Palypso de Creek has a bit in hand in the Pertemps. Dangers are Ainama (blatant non tryer so far this season), Buena Vista (same)
Clear as mud as usual but hope this is some help. Enjoy!

TF_MICK THE BOOKIETwo bets for me tomoz lads.
First…2/05…GHIZAO…This horse was bred for the flat and has a bit of class imo.He likes Cheltenham and although he has won on the soft,i think he will relish the better ground. He travels well in his races, and the booking of T.J.MURPHY is ideal for this race.I expect him to stay on up the hill, and his flat speed will carry him home.I have had a substantial bet on him at massive prices, and i think he will be around 20/1 tomoz…..Back it e/way.~shh ~shh ~shh ~shh.Secondly….4/00…LAKE LEGEND….A topical tip lads,as i am a legend on the lakes…..lol.
But i do fancy it strongly, and will be having a fairly big bet on it…. ~think ~think .
BEST OF LUCK….MTB. -

TF_One fishNot a winner today, never mind there’s 3 days left.I think I remember johnson saying on raglan road was the best horse in his yard.Think he may have had problems but could be worth an e/w.

TF_geepsterParticipantOkay well thanks to a bit of laying i managed to finish three points up.
In terms of backing, today as you know I like Rite of Passage each way.
Okay his bumper form may have taken a bit of a knock with Dunguib getting beat, but I still think that was given a poor ride and should and would have won if he’d been put in there. Don’t think the jockey gave him a chance of winning.
I also like Masterminded who appears to be back to his best. If he is, he’ll win, again.

TF_KatarinoEveryone I know down there, the mob I go with, the Irish lads I meet every year and the gang in the pub ALL did their proverbials, never known one like it. I did manage 1 winner but for the most part it was 4 days of head scratching and blank looks. Roll on next year :-).
Comic Highlight of the week was Michael O’Leary collecting his trophy for Weapons Amnestys’ win. Just as he was handed it a wag in the crowd shouted, “Charge him a pound for picking it up”. The place collapsed and O’Leary himself laughed but he didn’t like it….

20/03/2010 at 3:41 am #99281
TF_MICK THE BOOKIELike everyone else i did mine bigtime.
I did however back a winner yesterday….BABY RUN….But i did think for one ghastly second it was going to get caught on the line as it stopped as if shot on the run in…..He was just like the Irishman stumbling from the Guiness tent…lol.
As Katarino said……roll on next year….But you better start saving now…lol. -
20/03/2010 at 8:08 am #99284
TF_kev34Well a great 4 days but hard for punters,thursday/friday where awful for me but still ended up a little……..
My funny story from tuesday was standing at the bar for an hour in club next to Andy Townsend,we got chatting to him and he gave us a tip for the bumper….It can`t lose lads all the football lads are on it Drumbaloo it was called and it ran like a pig…
Best moments where watching tony mcoy keep getting of the ground after some awful falls and getting on with again.Makes some footballers like like big GIRLS.And Kauto star getting up unscathed after his crashing fall..
Worst moment looking for my betting slip(quevega £375) for half an hour THEN REALISNG I HAD ALREADY CASHED IT LOL
-
22/03/2010 at 12:17 am #99492
TF_KatarinoTo paraphrase Graham Taylor, lets’s not knock it. For a start the Gold Cup winner has NEVER been beaten at Cheltenham, I backed it in Ryanair last year. IC is another REAL horse we should treasure.
Kev: O’Gradys Shot from the Hip in Bumper was backed as if “Money from America”…crashed and burnt…..
Kim Muir: 5(!!!!) were gambled and a drifter won it, that sort of year….
Usual footballers doing their nuts etc but it’s still the best racing week in the world and if you’ve never been, book now, it’ll change your life 😉
