        Hi Guys

Its that time of year again, and i feel the need to inform you of the dangers insecticde can cause to fish and fisheries.

All wasp nests treated with a insecticide should not be used for fishing.

Even Nippon ant killer with a active ingreedient of only 0.5% permethrin would kill any fish that comes into contact with it.

The LD50 (lethal Dose) required to conaminate a fishery/ water coarse is less that 1 part per 1.000.000.

The only wasp grubs that should be used for fishing are the nests that have been dug up using no insecticide at all.

        Thanks for reading this tread

        Regards Dave

Evidence please? Because it sounds like you’re trying to get some poor sod stung to death?

I’m an old g*t and used the grub on Avon, Severn and Wye back in day with no obvious ill effects. Used correctly the powders kill the adult wasps and do not effect the Grub or the ‘cake’ and I’m bloody sure I’d have seen if they did. I’d also add I speak as someone who dug wasps nests despite having to carry an epi-pen.

If you read the health and safety data on the insecticide that you were using, you would not be asking for any evidence!!!!!

You cannot treat a wasp nest with insecticide without the wasps, coating the cake and grubs with the chemical.

You will have proberbly killed fish a the past mate.

Just read the paragraph on the LD50 report below on aquatic life and fish.

glad you raised this back shot

my dad’s got a nest in his loft that we’ve blasted, I was thinking about taking the grubs out on a chub session but now I’ll get rid properly

sorry but the argument that it will harm fish is not necessarily correct as the data refers to the LC50. this is the concentration in the water in which the fish live that will kill 50% of the population. 1:1,000,000 is 1mg in 1L of water, and it is likely that the entire wasp nest will be killed by around 10mg of permethrin depending on size. This only relates to 10L of water, and whilst many anglers like to fish puddles, i could put 10mg of permethrin in my aquarium probably with little effect.

The difficulty IMO is in understanding how much of it will get into the body of the grubs that will be ingested by the fish. We have no way of knowing how much this would be (0.008ug/bee was stated and could be used) or what the oral LD50 would be in fish and cannot therefore make a rational judgement with the available data. However, my advice would be to thoroughly rinse the grubs in water if you still want to use them

I have seen first hand, what affects insecticide have on fish and aquatic life in ponds when was working as a biologist.

I would urge anyone who cares about there fishing to think twice about using any insecticice on bait to be used for fishing or treatments around ponds or water courses.

To have the slightest trace of insecticide on any bait would be fatal to the fish, and inconsiderate to the fishery owner.

If you think the rinceing your bait in water would make it safe you would be very wrong.

Just read my post again, and to make it clear, I would consider it irresponsible to use grubs contaminated with insecticide as bait regardless of whether they are rinsed or not. My point above was that you really can’t infer anything from the data shown on the material safety data sheet, so it’s best to err on the side of caution.

Permethrin is designed to be toxic to insects and will also affect other species, too, so please do the right thing; don’t use the affected grubs/cake.
