Can anyone reccomend some decent waterproofs? My dad contacted portak, and they are retiring so can’t garantee they would be made. He doesn’t want to pay for halkon hunt or goretx. So what’s out there?

get on ebay and search goretex m8 ,i got a goretex jacket for walking and climbing ,in navy ,only thing missing is a fishing brand name etc , i mean a fishing brand name dosnt make them any more water proof , but this jacket was only £50 reduced from £150 , its 2xxl and i dont think there is many folk who are 2xxl climbing mountains and such, also got a lightweight fishing trousers in gortex, they are called fristad workware for £42 ,ok they are a bit big on the waist but a pair of braces has it sorted ,i can honestly say that i can sit out in this dreadfull weather , knowing that i will be bone dry ,hope this helps.

Well guess you sometimes need to just quit…..shame would have thought there was still mileage in their product and that they would sell it on.

Rang then today and yep they are retiring and any order placed today would take until January to deliver. It would seem they are looking at passing the business on to someone, but nothing has yet been decided.

http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/rainwear-how-it-works.html this link gives you plenty of advice about the pro’s and cons of waterproof membranes and clear explanations of the various terms used.

After being a firm fan of protak for more years than I can recall, to then find they were closing down as we know it I was reluctantly forced to look elsewhere. H&H couldn’t guarentee delivery before Christmas and there were no off the peg alternatives that I would trust to deliver the promise here in UK.

I looked at Cabelas in USA and BassPro and they both were selling ideal gear for the outdoors. I settled on the Cabela Guidewear with thinsulate linings, in both the jacket and Bib n brace. The lining extends all the way down the legs and is non removable, this doesn’t bother me as this kit is for winter use. I have worn it recently and wearing only a thin pair of walking trousers and a lightweight fleece shell, I’ve been as warm as toast and stayed very dry.

The Total cost of it and getting it from USA to UK via DHL was £380. ordered it on a Friday evening online and it was delivered the following Thursday. Customs and vat charged at source, so shouldn’t be any follow on costs from the big bro.

The Jacket is longer than a ‘pole jacket’ which I feel gives better coverage of the back and doesn’t leave any cold spots, The hood is not stowable or detachable but in my view thats a plus as the detachable ones always seem to leak at the zip or poppers. Enough pockets inside the jacket. The Bib is very warm and the seat and knees are re-inforced. The side leg zips extend well up the leg and enable easy on off of boots. All in all I’m very happy with the purchase..there is also an uninsulated version too.
