Diawa Reels problem

ok chaps i have 2 diawa reels (changed from shimano reels last year)
anyway i got a whisker
and a tdr both in the 3012? sizes
anyway BOTH reels are suffering from the same problems
number one is the bail arm is refusing to go right back over and seems to stick half way???

and the other is the backwind switch
i like to play my fish by backwinding, so i have the switch set so it wont backwind, then i strike, if theres a fish on i flick the switch and backwind
trouble is now again on BOTH reels i have the switch set so it doesnt backwind AND IT DOES!
makes you look a right prick when you strike and the reel spins like mad!! and cost me a fair few fish as well!!

anybody else having these problems and can they be fixed???

not had the backwind problem and i have 6 daiwa reels, but have had the bailarm problem on 3 of my reels, on 2 of them it will click over most of the time, on one of them an airity it wont click over full stop, have to do it myself, one of the reels that clicks over now and again is a branzino, not good!

I have had the bale arm sticking on my 3012 . Bit annoying as I also changed from shimano last year because of the same problem. No probs with the backwind switch though.

No need to get them fixed if they are in guarantee.

You need new reels! In my experience Daiwa (and many other manufacturers) will simply replace them

Had the same problem with my Shimano reels both of them FA4000.
Took them to bits and took a look inside found the culprit it was a perished friction ring,the bail arm engaging trip runs along this to trip it shut and gets stuck on the perished ring.One had even got snagged in the turning part of the reels head causing it to jerk like crazy. Took mine off and they work good as new 5 minute job once you know how to do it.This was on a Shimano reel not a Daiwa but you never know sounds very similar to the problems I had with bail arm and drag.

I had a similar problem with the back wind not always engaging on a TDR 3012, contacted the shop I bought them from, but they explained they would just contact Daiwa on my behalf.

So I contacted Daiwa myself to speed up the whole process, explained the problems, and they agreed to send me a new one out once they received my reel.

Never had a problem since, and excellent service from Daiwa.

theres no way im takin my reel apart lol
done that before and have the scrap to prove it lol!

ive had the reels for about 18 months so dont reckon they will still be under any guarantee or anything, plus i never keep reciepts etc…
i may just take em down to the local tackle shop and maybe they can service em?
its not that i havent looked after them, i regular clean em and grease around the spool area, just annoyed about the backwind switch and surprised that its happened on BOTH reels!

Smed – I’d had my TDR about 6months before it starting playing up, and I don’t think I was ever asked by Daiwa to provide proof of this. So I’d definately give it a try.

my airitys used to do the bail arm thing.
sent them back to daiwa who sent them back to me still doing it.
on closer inspection i found the screw in the bail arm ( next to the roller ) was slightly loose on both reels.
i unscrewed them and put some thread lock on them both and then tightened them back up.
problem solved.

Even if you’ve had them 18 months I would still send them to Daiwa. They may still replace them. If they do ‘only’ repair them the quality of the work will be great and embarrassingly cheap.

This is one area where I have found tackle manufacturers to offer fantastic service

cant fault diawa for repairs.i had a close faced reel a few years ago now and it was out of warranty and kept sticking really bad.i sent it to diawa to see if it could be fixed and for a price to fix it and all i had to pay was pp but the best thing was when it returned the reel was just like brand new.was the same reel but been totally been refurbed. excellent service.

thanks to dirkdiggler just went and tightened up the screws on the bailarms, all seem ok now, only one problem, one of the screws on the airity wont tighten, just keeps spinning, any ideas?

Had the bail arm problem but not the backwind one, daiwa can do a full service on your reel for £6. I contacted there service dept and they sent me the info.

Had Daiwa reels since about 1996, TDS 3000’s I think, never had a problem. Still have them and CU’s, Whiskers,Excellor plus and Caldia’s.
