Run down required! The centre of the float is 2mm hollow mate, simple put a float stop above the float on your line and have a bulk underneath the float or some fish with a 10mm pellet you can search the depths by lifting and dropping your rig through your float

The rigs I’ve seen have a bulk (3X8 stotz) 6″ from the hook and then a shot (no6) above the float. The rig is made up on about 3ft of line, the no6 is about 6″ from pole tip, the idea is you lift and drop through the centre of the float the reason for the shot above the float is to keep the line straight so enabling smoother lifting. The no6 can be increased in size if wind gets up (a bit like back shotting). Some guys slap the rig ( when allowed) and lift and drop.Obviously the rig can be tweaked to suit conditions and how the fish want it on the day.
Hope this helps. -

TF_Fred Davisyes I still make a few ant my newest pattern is special bream skimmer float for Lake john or stafford moor these specials are used by Alan Dove who had 30 double figure bream to 16lb 8oz at walthamstow , he uses them to great effect at lake John and stafford moor and quite a few other venues, he holds the silvers record for the LPR festival using one, I must admit that unless angling mates are desperate I try not to sit on the lathe if I can help it as I do play an awful lot of table tennis these days in the winter (daily) + coaching, plus it became a bit of a pain making them, most lads got them for what it costs to make them then the odd prat steals a foam which contains 30 floats and you think why bother, I may well get back on the lathe and renew my enthusiasm however as long as I have enough for myself and a few close mates I happy I do tend to find that the desire to make them comes and goes, making floats costs time and unfortunately time is precious lol

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantFred I love floats ! Ionly make for a hobby really Ive always liked making wagglers and then pole floats in recent years, theres not alot of money in making pole floats I echo what you say in some respects the hassle far outweighs the few bob you make yourself. I enjoy catching on my own floats and like watching others catch on my floats, The Double Dippers are proving very popular because they are a bigger heavy version of a jigga float and something people are wanting for fishing for propper carp venues.

TF_Fred Davisquite right Ant and your floats look superb, however speaking for myself I have made quite a few over time and really enjoyed it however I don’t have as much time as I used to so priorities change, my lathe is all set up ready to go mt8 as soon as the inclination comes back Ill knock out a quick 30 or 40 of each pattern and get back into the swing maybe when the weather warms up a bit I’ll get back to machining up a few more, also my table tennis leagues ease off in march so I will have more time, demand for my handmade floats is always there, however I always said that if it became a chore or hassle I would ease off as it was and always has been just a hobby for me, the trouble is Ant that as demand increases as it will do for your floats you will find yourself spending more and more time making them thats Ok at first and like you say it’s great to see anglers winning with your floats but the demand then increases and before you know it your spending even more time on the lathe, as fast as you make them they go! the peer pressure from anglers increases and you suddenly feel obligated to make them even if it is a joy for next to no money, then suddenly something clicks and you say TIME lol Chatting to Mick Fordham who makes quite a few even he has scaled down as he found himself in the same situation, all of a sudden you start going to matches and are being hassled for floats instead of concentrating your efforts into fishing the match youv’e become a supplier of an increasing demand and anglers being anglers want them for half of what it cost you to make them, I go fishing to enjoy the sport have a bit of banter and more importantly try to win a brown envelope, now for me with floatmaking the drive to win suddenly dissappeared as I was more ingrossed at matches with floats for mates instead of fulfulling my aim to produce for the team or to even win as an individual, as soon as I realised that floatmaking was affecting my fishing I left the floats at home and the pools pick ups started to return, I applaud anyone who has a go at floatmaking however I would say don’t become too engrossed as although it is an enjoyable and without doubt rewarding hobby it will take up time away from preparing for matches properly and lack of prep time could/will affect your results as an angler. I still have orders from mates to fulfill and loads of requests for certain patterns I nod and say the’l be done when there done Knowing possibly that it could well be quite a while before I sit back down on a lathe again, time for me I am afraid is too precious 😉 😀 😀 😀 😀

Exactly right Fred,I think if you look at alot of float makers they run round like blue arsed flies trying to make everyone happy, at the moment im happy making a few if it started taking over I would curb things because compared to my salary the returns are pretty poor. Regards
Anthony
