Am thinking the same as you pal I’ve just got a couple they look bang on for long line dobbing!! They look quite a strong float pal am gona try mine this weekend so I’ll let you no how they fair up

i’m not so sure, whilst its easy to see the advantages of pole float ‘crystal’ plastic bodies for dibbers. For deck, perhaps margin floats and usual depths up to 3′ but any deeper than 4′ cant ‘see’ much point?
Mind you given most commie fishing is 1-3′ effectively then conventional patterns in 4×10,12 and 14 might be worth trying if Drennan go further – particularly thinking of clear water and winter.
Though, given their AS range development its a hard to see where they dont end up competing?
That said, pretty sure most would try – and deffo buy a range of such floats – as ‘pole float collecting’ seems a popular activity( include myself 😮 ) whether you end up actually using them much or not,? 🙂

I reckon they missed an opportunity to make a really robust float for this kind of application.
By using a conventional metal eyelet they have put a weakness in that is a weakness with the balsa version, when it rips out the float is wrecked and will take on water. This crystal dibber will surely sink once that happens..the float looks useful and will appeal to the slappers and dobbers only using it will show if the design needs a rethink..no doubt Uncle Alan has field tested it for a year but he’s not an animal when it comes to playing fish so it will be interesting to see if it can take the stick I know alot of muggers give their gear. 🙂

Fred, I don’t like to correct you, but as far as I know a No. 8 shot weighs 0.06g, so surely 5 x No.8 = 0.3g doesn’t it? I think you have got your maths wrong or the makers of stotz have redefined the weights of No. 8’s.

They sound very bouyant A no 8 does weigh 0.06grm but 5 no 8 would sink most 0.3grm floats i know where freds coming from. I make some floats that are well out of proportion i use 0.4grm bodies and .6mm wire, these floats také 6 x no11 where in theory they should také 13 no 11s. I think this is why some float make now specify a shotting for their floats eg 10 x no 11s rather than a .000 whatever gram. Going back to the drennan crystals if the eye is set into the molten plastic it should be concrete, what about the stems are they glass or thicker wire ?

Glen, apologies to drennan 5 X 8 shot is indeed 0.3 of a gram , I must admit that having in the past used other so called floats of .3 of a gram that take nothing like that amount of shot, normally a couple of number tens! I have been brainwashed into thinking that a .3 float should be lighter, even though I knew that a number 8 is .06 of a gram thank god that when I hand make my floats they have proper English measures on them and are tank tested to ensure they are spot on with weights on them as an example 4 x10 or 5 x 8 etc something that the brain can understand without thinking 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

However hands up I engaged the mouth without the brain being engaged 😮

Health wise I am back up and running having had my prostate removed seven weeks ago everything is “A” Ok and I have been given the all clear and good to say that one doctor said my recovery was excellent, fished my first match Sunday won my section of eleven and came 5th overall in the match 66 fished, however was a bit gutted to have to withdraw from the Garbolino clubman southern qualifier this year having qualified for the final on more than one occasion due to the fact that I wasn’t sure if I would be fit enough to compete. Still looking forward to a good season now.

Thanks wightangler the operation/prostatectomy was done by robot with 6 tiny small incisions and although a major operation they had me walking the following morning then recovery at home, however I think if it had not been for robotics my recovery time would have been longer and more traumatic I dare say. However drennan clear dibbers can’t wait to give them a whirl, held back on a new pole until I got the results so now I may invest but which one :rolleyes:

The floats are rock solid construction,with a solid side eye fitted.you will probably destroy the float trying to get the eye to pull out while fishing.
and remember that unlike many other companies,Drennan field test their products before release,with quality control,at every stage of manufacture.

Managed to get some they look pretty much what I expected apart from the eyes seem exceptionally small

I have used them to great affect and no issue with breakages or eyes pulling. Drennan are not known to rush products out until they are fully developed and with with guys like Alan on board you can’t help but be impressed !
