TF_Waveney OneI had 3 on Saturday on the R. Yare. Not so many as a few years back but there are still plenty caught in the matches every week.
The Broads still have plenty despite the cormorants and otters. Actually the otters in particular may well suffer as the the eels on the roads system have a high concentration of mercury in them. No licences to net eels on the have been issued for years on the Yare because of this and people have told not to eat them either.
As we know, apex predators accumulate things like mercury and DDT in their systems as their prey all have it in them.

TF_DodgeI weighed in my section on the 84 peg Crewe summer league a couple of weeks ago on the Trent & Mersey canal @ Northwich , one angler caught a huge eel so i weighed it seperately ….. it went 3.2.8 !
Also there was another eel caught on an open on the Shropshire Union canal @ Norbury last saturday which went nearly 4.0.0 i believe. Lots of eels coming out this summer from the Shropshire Union canal network ~clap

You are right – here in the UK and northern Europe it has been banned but it is still in the environment, my body mate and everyone elses over 30! It is something that will be in the environment for years I am afraid. Also a lot of countries where they have serious malaria problems have been using it until the millennium and to quote from the DDT fact sheet http://www.pan-uk.org/pestnews/Actives/ddt.htm
“Global contamination
DDT is one of nine persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which bioaccumulate, and which are transported by air and water currents from warmer climates to temperate zones, where they have never been used. The process of degradation is dramatically slowed down in cooler climates. The global risk of adverse effects to human health and the environment has led the international community to mandate the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to convene an intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC) for a POPs Convention to phase out production and use.”It may well be responsible for my diabetes as well according to the fact sheet!

Carp-CatchaParticipantRiver Nene is a consistent provider of eels, particularly when fishing for carp, bream, in fact any other species. Had a 4lb out a couple of days ago.

Anonymousthere’s a few in the stainy at the moment.quite a few small ones as well which is a good sign as it shows that they’re not getting netted as they come up the tidal trent(the stainy joins the trent).for a few years we just had the big old eels up to 3lb.
