A fishy delivery: 2,000 trout added to Farmoor reservoir for anglers
Anglers keen for a fresh trout supper were today urged to visit Oxford’s Farmoor reservoir after stocks were topped up.
More than 2,000 trout were delivered to the reservoir on Friday to keep anglers busy at the ‘catch and keep’ section of water in the Oxfordshire countryside.
Trout fishing at Farmoor has become increasingly popular with the number of visitors increasing by 26 per cent in the last year alone.
With more and more fishing taking place on the water, Thames Water will be adding 2,000 fish every month to maintain an average of three fish per angler per visit.
Matt Prior, Recreation Manager at Thames Water, said:
“A lot of trout fishing sites are really struggling at the moment but we have managed to attract an annual increase in the number of people fishing here.
“We’ve done that by making sure our reservoirs are full of fish to catch and also offering tranquil surroundings on the side of the reservoir.
“One of the lakes at Farmoor is stocked primarily with sport fish, both browns and rainbow trout which are introduced between 800g to 1.5kg. These ‘veritable torpedo’s’ of the trout world are highly recognised as some of the hardest fighting fish in the county.
“In contrast, the second lake is stocked with fewer fish but of a better quality with introductions being in the 2kg to 3.5kg size range offering a harder sporting challenge to our visiting anglers but a better prize which in most cases when hooked, can take over 30 minutes to get into the net. This level of superb sport makes coming back an easy decision for the anglers as they aspire to catch that fish of a lifetime.â€
