Not great weights for a televised spectacle?
I did not bother going this year and went fishing myself instead, was it a bit of a stinker with the low weights?
Well done to the winner though!

Just going to say it as I see it.
Think the fishery has pandered to the moans of top match anglers who want a so called ‘fairer match’ but have forgotten that this is a TV event that needs drama.
As a TV spectacle I thought it was pretty hopeless, with no chance of a come-back once someone established a good lead.
This is not a normal match, it is a TV event and absolutely the most important aspect is NOT how ‘fair’ it is for the competitors, but how angling comes across to the masses to the non angling public and therefore how likely it is to attract people to the sport. Big mistake in my view.
For me, in an event like this, it is much better if someone who is ‘nowhere’ still has a chance of winning it in the last hour. No chance now = rubbish on TV.

A few 94lb Catfish would do the trick!
One of those in the last half an hour – job done!

                Just a few thoughts.

“Pandered to the moans of top match anglers who want a so called fairer match” etc

                – Its on a perfectly round lake with each peg having an equal amount of water to go at, to try and make it as fair as possible. While some tension adds to the occasion, and the possibility of a few big fish changing the result might excite some people, I think everybody fishing it would want a fair match.

                – with it being a ‘fairer’ match, there was probably more possibility of more anglers being in with a shout towards the end. Those bigger carp don’t give themselves up all over the lake in any great number.

                – was it more of a spectacle last year? one of my mates had four fish, and two of them were foul hooked. Not much of a spectacle watching blokes blanking, or barely getting a bite. At least with smaller fish theres something to look at, and something for the pundits to talk about and analyse.

                – If one chap pulls away a big enough lead with an hour to go to make the result academic then fair play to him

                – Since when do big weights make fishing more a spectacle? A weight is just a number.

                I enjoyed it anyway…

Small fish is better for match anglers, but not for spectators, in my opinion. See above.

Don’t agree. Don’t there was any chance of catching the winner from around three quarters of the way through.

In my opinion yes it was a much better watch last year. The cameras don’t concentrate on those at the back of a race. It’s a TV event.

Agreed, from a match fishing perspective. Not from a TV viewing perspective.

Depends if you are trying to appeal to match anglers, or to the wider public.
I would much prefer to be fishing a small fish match myself. It is very difficult to appeal to both for obvious reasons. But this is the only TV match in the calendar, and therefore needs to pander to what TV demands, not what anglers would like
                  .

                  I enjoyed it anyway…

It wasn’t terrible and both Sky and Keith and co did a good job again. But the match itself didn’t really work for TV in my opinion. Of course it’s not an exact science and I can see why they have re-stocked for sure. And of course you could easily have a big fish match that someone runs away with as well. But it was hardly a fish race and, well I dunno I didn’t feel like it really got going somehow. Maybe it’s just me

And does Jamie Hughes care….. spectacle or not?

You probably would see more enjoyment from a youngster catching a few Perch than many anglers show dragging out 100 kilos of fish, just watch Mr Crabtree participants.

True all entered for a chance of the “Money” sometimes it don’t look good…… a bit like Man U but they will be back next year (the anglers that is).

Yes we all like to win in style but…….Bravo Riverfest, there’s more to fishing than fish…. just being there counts sometimes, if not, you really should consider what a great sport we have and ask what you can do for it, rather tan what it does for you?

This year was the first time I’ve ever watched, or payed any attention to, Fisho, I only watched it because my mate was fishing it. I thought it was a pretty fair match and would have preferred it if they showed more fishing and less studio chat.
I’ve read a lot on social media this week, people saying they want to see more big fish caught. I don’t understand this, unless they are not ‘match anglers’??. A match is a match, size of fish doesn’t matter.
