TF_moto46Please do not buy a Renault I had a new shape Renault Megane from new and it was the WORST car I have ever owned. I had it from new and the list of problems was baffling and the costs involved were not funny. The car was very unreliable and build quality terrible. Complaints to Renault were completely ignored until I took the dealer to court and won. (had better not say anymore) anyway got a 2.0ltr tdci turbo diesel Mondeo and its one of the best fishing cars I have ever used very reliable and nice to drive (they sell millions for a reason)

Wait till you have trouble with the dual mass flywheel (and you will)

If it’s a n A4 you may find it a little short for rod holdalls and a bit narrow between the rear suspension towers, the A6 would be better

TF_Mike HerringtonCheers Peter, I currently use an Audi A3 and get two of us with all the gear in, so can’t be any shorter than that LOL.

I know they do mate but Mondeos have a lot of trouble with them, and I know from several mates in the motor trade.
My C5 has one, but in at 145k it is still fine. I would suggest a C5 estate (they’re huge inside) but nearly everybody hates French cars so I won’t!

stkflotei dont hate my french cars, this is second picasso ive had lovely cars those old zsara estate,s had loads room ,and gave good service,if its a diesel modeo then the engine tdi is same as citroen hdi, both made by PSA peugots engine builders so i would think same gearbox

I have an 08 plate Titanium 2.0 Mondeo diesel estate and have banged best part of 50k miles on it. It’s a crackin car and better still you can get oodles of kit in it. We have had 3 people and 3 full sets of kit in it at the same time, Ok, there was not room to fart, but that is testiment to what you can get in it. It helps being wider and longer than the older Mondeo, whilst it is half a ton heavier as well, so it’s road holding with low profiles is the dogs.

chosserParticipantcheers guys for your comments i should of also said that my father in laws caravan lives on my drive and i can use it anytime but it is the biggest single axle van you can buy weighing 1500kg loaded ,so i need a heavy car to meet the pulling weight but dont want a 4 wheel drive and dont like borrowing his crv as i have 2 kids and its his pride and joy so renault / galaxy /passts are the heavy weighers, and my budget is £7000 so galaxys and passats are usually big milleage in this price bracket , my thinking is take the caravan fish but have the family with me job done 2 birds one stone, are espaces really that crap does the price reflect the car ?

TF_PaddyEasy….second hand Mondeo! 7k should get your hands on an ex fleet car. Normally fleet cars go to auction and are not sold onto to either private or main dealers, so if you can find the larger auction places they would be the places to go. You can ring them and ask when they expect ex fleet deliveries.

TF_dave brittainI’ve been keeping an eye out on Autotrader for a new car for when I come home in April to get an idea of how much the cars are going for.
I wouldn’t touch a C5 unless it was a bargain as I’ve had one and they aren’t cheap to maintain due to the hydro-elastic suspension and they do suffer badly from electical faults.
Out of the fleet cars I’ve driven the 6 speed Mondeo wins hands down, however the Nissan Primera is also very good.
My budget will be around £3K as I tend not to spend a lot on cars for fishing. For that I should be able to get a 2002-2004 Mondeo, (hatchback or estate), with FSH in VGC and 65-80K on the clock.

17/01/2010 at 9:36 am #89220
TF_PaddySpot on there Dave. 7k should buy some thing very good ex fleet and as you say the 6 gear manual box on the Mondy is a cracker. The 2.0 ltre jobbies would easily handle that caravan.

TF_dunnoDont mock it…….
Skoda Octavia diesel estate. 600miles on a tank of diesel, same size and parts as an A4, slightly smaller than a passat and therefore more economical.
Chassis is same as Golf and A4

Wangla~think My espace is on a 53 plate, had it 3 years, previous owner used to drive to spain in it on a regular basis (4-5 times per year),52k on the clock, pulls like a gud un,can get up East Bank Rd in Sheffield in 4th with ease.(quite steep). 1.9Dci , had 50 mpg on a run ,carries loads of tackle.Downside, seats have to be removed as opposed to folding flat.Best vehicle i,ve owned up to now. My previous car was a R plate Vectra Estate,2.0i petrol, the espace p####s on it in every department.Mind you, vehicle before that was a G plate Cavalier 2.0i petrol, was sad to see it go, it didnt owe me a penny.

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantAnother vote for Mondeo 20 TDI here, ticks all the boxes for me i even took a tape measure with me when looking for a new car to make sure my rod holdhall would lay flat in the boot. You can get plenty of tackle in they are a big heavy solid car I have heard you can suffer clutch problems but all cars have their weaknesses.

Stu, I presume you are thinking 850 / V70? Avoid the 2.0 ones as they are no better on fuel than the 2.5 and were made to fit in the Co car tax brackets at the time. Unless you are a boy racer I wouldn’t bother with a T5. Not much to chose between the 10v or 20v versions except so extra horses and a bit more grunt. Don’t be put off by “high mileage ” ones either as they are capable of 250k + with no real problems. I’ve had both auto & manual versions and they were both fine. Best bit of advice is go for one with a few toys and half leather interior.
V40 is a waste of time as a fishing wagon as it is too short & narrow and the fuel consumption is really any better than the 850/V70. Mine used to return low to mid 30s on a run BTW.

i’m running around in a 95’m’ cav and had it since more or less new and to be honest like you its built to last but as a family we’ve have out grown it,personally i really don’t want to see the back of it as its been so reliable ..but times are changing..it will be a sad day when it goes…

TF_toplightsHad an Espace for years, great fishing cars and the engines where bullit proof, only problem i found was you couldn’t chuck em about on the road a bit top heavy, the newer models may be better.
Drive a V70 now lovely car but juicy, expensive when they break. -

TF_moto46Yeah soon after I got the Mondeo I had to have a new dual mass flywheel fitted (under warranty) so would recommend checking this but this is the only problem I have found. Renault problems were handbrake handle part broke inside handle £250, Rear L.E.D light failed £85, Rear discs inc bearings failed £250 pads kept squeaking (warranty) keycard issues (warranty) gaitor clip ? came away £80 numerous indicator failures at front £20 per trip to dealer headlamps bulbs £25 per trip to dealer (nearly impossible to do yourself engine kept cutting out (dealer couldnt solve) water leaking in passenger footwell (couldnt resolve) both front springs failed fuel mpg was way to low various numerous electronic issues, rattles all over felt crap to drive with very strange engine which slutters and rocks under the bonnet. I could go all this and the car had doen 20K miles and was looked after and driven carefully please avoid!!!!!!
