MrFoxmanWhen fishing in the summer i know a lot of anglers fish straight through when fishing the commercials but why?
For example, you foul hook a big carp when fishing paste and it heads for the centre of the lake. You’re fishing 0.22 straight through and the elastic bottoms out eventually. If you were using a hooklength that would snap and you can just attach a new one and be fishing very soon. That’s why i like to use hooklengths on all my rigs. Won’t you be worried that a pole section might get pulled off because there is no weak spot in the line to snap and its very strong line too?
My pellet rigs have 0.16 hooklengths which is strong enough for bagging carp on most commercials that i fish but if you foul hook one and it doesn’t stop heading for the horizon i know it won’t take much for the carp to snap the line so i dont risk a section being pulled off.

MrFoxmanWell yeah there is that as well, why risk breaking a section over a hooklength? You will lose the fish either way.

TF_MarkTI’ve started using hooklengths recently but when fishing straight through i’ve never been snapped at the elastics or had a section break tbh i can’t remember the last time i was snapped.

TF_Johnny MacI never use hooklengths, I never get snapped. I’ve never seen a section ‘pulled off’ either???

TF_MarkTUnless theres a problem with the line or hook you shouldn’t get snapped, bad angling imo if you do.

TF_RenarcI’m curious…what size fish are you expecting!! a PIG with fins on.. I also regularly fish striaght through,0.17 to 0.19 preston power line, black hydro,Maver 301,never been snapped off or remotely felt that I was about to lose or snap a top section..I’ve had several fish from 8lbs to 12lbs, and fish with paste quiet successfully, maybe its a confidance thing,as for a fish making a big run..try dropping your pole beneath the water, I find this can often subdue that first run, I see far to many anglers with 10 or 12mts of pole stuck up in the air, with elastic screaming out,not that this is what your doing – but I see it far to often.

Daddy BParticipantAlso, if you need to change a hook for any reason your rig will get a few inches shorter each time and could soon become useless.

not if you have marked the depth on your pole.
a mere adjustment of a few inches at best.~naughty

TF_GaryI use hooklengths (on deck rigs) too, but this is as much because I use eyed hooks and the knotless knot as anything else. I struggle to recall the last time I ‘got broke’.
Also, in my opinion, 0.16 is not heavy duty enough if you are bagging. Even for 2-3lb carp, I will use 0.21 in summer if I am bagging and can get away with it. Otherwise, you have to change the hooklength too frequently because carp bash it up in the landing net.

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantFox you need to get in the habit of using hooklengths, what do you do fishing straight through when your hook gets blunt after a couple of fish ? You chop a bit of your rig by tying a new hook on ! By the time you finish the session your left with 3 inch between your pole tip and float ive done it before ~clap ~clap ~clap

MrFoxmanAnthony, I do use hooklengths for all my fishing. Just wanted to know why people find fishing straight through better but it’s clear that it is just down to personal preference.

TF_budnuddParticipantThose who fish straight through could never give a reason as to why it’s better than h/l imo. Only 2 situations occur where I go s/through really shallow and paste. The versitility of h/l give you so many options it’s daft not to use them.
One lad in our club (a top angler) thinks loop-loop can affect presentation. So as with most things it’s each to their own I guess.

AnonymousI always use hooklengths, the main reason being if you get a fish snag you and have to pull for a break its the knot on the hooklength that will always go first, therefore you never lose your rig.

TF_matt hainesi always use a hook length its quick and simple to change if you get broke or snagged. i carry 5 hook wallets with ready tied hooks. the main dissadvantage i can see with straight through is the line is gonna normally break at the weakest point. thats gonna be at the knot so either at the hook or at the pole tip so now you will have a fish towing a float around. whereas with a hook lenght that will go first.

TF_DishyfishI sometimes I like to fish 0.12 silstar straight through in the winter. In one match I hooked a lump I knew it was foul hooked, and it jumped out of the water twice, with my pole bent like a bannana hanging on with a prayer. Elastic kept going and going! Then all went slack came back with just the shank of the hook. The hook was a PR21 16. The summer fish always straight through never have a problem.
The only thing I would say apart from upto the individual preference!! That fish which broke my hook. I only had ten minutes to get back in the water lucky I was prepared with a identical rig to get back out there. Another time might not be and could cost a match. so pros and cons for this post…

loftyAlso it saves buying numerous floats by using a hooklength!! Get to your peg pull off your selected mainline attach float + shot + hooklength + plumb up! Saves having shed loads of rigs made up in every hook size, line diameter and correct float size! If you spend and hour one or 2 nights a week tieing hooklengths you’ll soon have enough of everything covered to last a hell of a long time!

TF_Ryanwon’t the hooklengths get weaker in the boxes or are they alright aslong as they don’t get wet, sunlight on the?

loftyPrestons boxes for this are awesome, i use a sensa loop tyer and with these boxes you can get everything spot on. Think about how long line sits on the shelves in tackle shops and 99.9% of the time you wont get a problem with that! I made the moveover to hooklengths last year and it is so much better than straight through
