TF_fish_silverI think it’s wrong that Kieth is telling Tommy how and where other anglers are catching.
Wouldn’t be so bad if ever angler in the match was able to hear his commentary ~naughty ~naughty -

TF_brettParticipanta very well done to neil mckinnon for winning the fisho today ! he worked at his craft & built up his tally during the last hour . commiserations to tommy , but I have to ask `why didnt you prepare a margin or shallow rig ? sitting behind that splodger all the time cost you the match !!~clap

TF_yiddoI was thinking exactly the same brett i cant believe somebody with as much experience as tommy never had a long pole or a margin line primed just in case the feeder dried up if he had gone on the margin for the last 30 mins he would’ve only needed 1 fish the same size as andy north caught and he would be champ

TF_MarkTWhats to say there would of been fish in them swims?!
If he’d gone on them swims and didn’t catch you’d be saying he’s should of stayed on the method.
He fished the way he said he was going too.
-
17/07/2010 at 7:36 pm #110553
TF_CraftytaftyI agree MarkT
He had a plan and stuck to it,fished to win, that’s why he’s so good and a winner.
Neil McKinnon fished with a plan and his came off on the day, fished a good match.
If Tommy had come off the method and gone down the edge and not caught everyone would have said he should have stopped on the method.I thought it was a good match to watch ( apart from the ad breaks!!!!)
-
17/07/2010 at 8:09 pm #110555
TF_brettParticipantagree with you all & your comments , but it only takes 1 minute to visit a margin to see if there`s a fish there , if he had been priming it all match it may have produced .
tommy stuck to his game plan & he lost !~naughty -
17/07/2010 at 8:11 pm #110557
TF_yiddoTommy may not have caught down the edge markt but if you dont try you will never know and the thing with margin fishing is if there are any fish about you will get a bite within a minute. the point i am trying to make is that tommy knew in the last 30 mins that neil had overtook him but he didnt try anything different if he was fishing for england the management would make him try something to catch a fish which is why i think he should’ve had a back up plan
-
17/07/2010 at 8:22 pm #110559
TF_red_hydroFor me one of the best finals ever with the exceitement of the match going down to the last minute.
Neil Mac took a gamble and it worked catching over 10 kilo in the last half hour.
Its easy for us to sit here and write this but I agree with Brett and Yiddo, Tommy should of kept his other lines primed, especially his margin line
-
17/07/2010 at 8:24 pm #110560
TF_MarkTWhats England got to do with it??
This is an individual event, he’s not fishing for points or sections, he’s fishing for himself!
You will not always got a bite straight away when fishing down the edge so thats total rubbish. He could of potenionally missed fished coming off his method line to have a look at the margins.
Even Matt Hall said you don’t get indications straight away when going down the edge and that Tommys best of staying doing what he’s doing. What is his judgement and experiance not good enough either!

TF_Baby Faced AssassinParticipantBest fisho ever!!!!!!
Tommy looked to be achieving his goal at holding what is known as the 2nd best title in Angling as well as the best one in 1989, and then an excellent angler who I had tipped before the draw in Neil McKinnon, had the mental attitude and angling ability to pull off one of the best come backs in a match of all time in my opinion.
Tommy fed the middle all day and he said he tried it a couple of times. I thought that his method line would dry up towards the end of the match and I thought he would give the middle line a go in the last hour when it could have been solid. Clearly though, a margin line would probably have been a better bet in hindsight.
My congratulations go to Neil McKinnon of course, and all the people behind putting match angling on the tele…… oh and Sky for bringing out sky plus 🙂

TF_redarmyto be honest im glad pickering got beat,as an angler i have the utmost respect for him but after an article he did in match fishing a few years ago i lost any respect for him as an ambassador for the sport.the article in question was on a commercial which was suffering from debris on the surface he refered to the debris (scum) as man utd fans.joking apart as someone in his position he was totally out of order and a disgrace to his sponsors.

TF_redarmymarkt pickering is supposed to be an ambassador for his sponsors and angling in general what he thinks personally about a football team shouldnt of been printed or voiced in an angling article

TF_daverobertsLets not do this tactical assassination please. It’s disrespectful to the anglers and believe me it hurts!
Tommy fed all his lines all day long. He stopped feeding his long pole line half way through but religously fed his meat line at about 18 metres. He was constantly looking at his margin swim because anyone who has fished Cudmore will know that it’s fairly obvious when they turn up.
Also anyone who has ever seen TP fish a method feeder will know why he had the belief to stick with it. The same belief that has seen him win everything else this sport has to offer.
As for Neil I’m chuffed to bits for him. He’s a class act, worthy winner and nice bloke to boot. What a performance.
As for the match it may have been hard but the venue was fair. The organisers have got it right with stoppers etc. There was a lot of stick flying around after last years final so lets applaud them now. This must have been one of the most exciting finals for years.
The 16 finalists all won a 130 peg match to get there. They have nothing to prove with regards to their tactical nouse or their instincts to close out a match. If their tactics were wrong they will be the ones to disect it and learn.

TF_geepsterParticipantRedArmy – perhaps the magazine shouldn’t have printed it? Do you think reporters print everything people say?
Very good match and well done to Neil McKinnon who fished to his strengths, as Tommy did.
Hindsight is always 20:20 but if the tip had gone round in the last half an hour, 15 minutes, 10 minutes, five minutes then he might have held onto his lead, and let’s face it, Neil’s last half an hour was nothing like any of the other half hours for anyone else.
He was saying that the bites were coming out of the blue, and he daren’t pick it up.
On the basis of all of the rest of the match, Tommy was thinking that ‘one more fish will win it’, and that he’d had at least one every half an hour.
As it happens he might have needed two, but that’s fishing.
Well done to Neil I say… who also own me a tidy sum on Betfair in running… backed him at 12s, laid him off at 3s.

TF_andynorth2003ParticipantWhat a top day !!!
I watched Neil practice on what was peg10 on the day on Wednesday and he emptied it.
Went home, put a bet on myself at 20/1 and a tenner on Neil at 14/1.I’ll be interested to see how it fishes today, cos I know Matt Halls and Steve Jacksons plan was to fish like I did. Long, feeding heavily with worm/caster/hemp mix.
Gutted after my first hour, where it was solid.
The lake just switched off and it then became a carp match as the barbel just did not want to know.Looking back, after 2 1/2 hours I should have come up in the water like Neil, but I stuck to my game plan which was not right in the end.
final hour like most meant sitting it out down the edge on a full dendra.
Result when I got that lump out with two mins left !!Roll on the qualifiers next year !!!

TF_wayne2009lets face it tommy sat on a method that is known for catching bigger fish, and when you can fish it as good as he can why not in, he fished a great match but neil just fished a better one in the last 30mins
