I am currently going through one of my phases where pulling my own teeth is only slightly less appealing than going fishing. I just can’t find any enthusiasm and have only been once in the last twelve months. I was speaking to an old mate yesterday and he has sold all his match gear and has taken up fly fishing and is loving it, it got me thinking I would quite fancy a crack at that, sort of back to basics, roaming small rivers, travelling light without the kitchen sink. Does anybody else dabble at this and how do you get on with it.

My brother does a lot, there are three good commercial trout waters near us and he’s had a lot of double figure fish. He also does a lot of stream and river fishing on the fly and has caught everything roach, chub, carp etc.
I’ve had a few goes myself but can’t really get into it, it’s one of those things that either grabs you or it doesn’t. If it does, I believe it’s very addictive (a bit like REAL fishing) LOL

I believe carpmagic does a fair bit, perhaps he will see this and comment.

I have been a couple of times on my own on a natural reservoir and a stream and never even saw a fish let alone had a bite. There is casting and there is casting properly, so you don’t scare everything within a mile radius. Its very hard work and very difficult but at the same time very rewarding. I loved it though as it was great to get back to a basic stalking approach and it was nice being on my own with just nature for company. Another good idea if your struggling to get enthusiastic is to pack yourself off somewhere where you can stalk and freeline for chub. Streams weirs and backwaters are great spots and if you do snatch the odd fish it is also very rewarding as they put up a hell of a scrap.

I have a season ticket on the big reservoirs ie Pitsford, Rutland Grafham etc and in the summer prob fish 3 evenings a week. I dont leave the house till 8pm and am home again just after 10pm. I really enjoy it as i can be at Pitsford in 5 mins and only need a rod, a bag and a net and im fishing. For me its a great chance to get away from it all as with Pitsford being so big its easy to find your own space. I would def reccomend fly fishing to anyone, particularly if they want a break from match fishing or similar.

Sea fishin can be quite a nice alternative when ur bored of relatively light nets, a bit like payin darts left handed, but it’s still darts if you know what i mean..

yeah i go fly fishing quite often, and find this time of the year to be the best..
instead of sitting still for 5 hrs catching little, i can roam around the lake and get a few…
ive mainly stuck to commercial trout waters, but a few trips out on a boat on a local huge res opened my eyes!
as did a trip on the ribble last winter, a dace a chuck on the fly with a few chub to boot!!!
think i had one small brownie!!

only done a bit of summer trouting with dries, and didnt seem to do as well so ill stick to match fishing in summer with the odd trout sessions in winter…

I go sea fishing both boat and shore, fly fishing (mainly saltwater) and also spend time specimen hunting mainly for bream, tench, chub and barbel. Having a good variation keeps it interesting and you can take a lot from other forms of fishing even though they are not directly linked to match fishing.

It’s an excellent diversion from Match and course fishing in general.

You aren’t limited to one spot, you carry very little tackle and when they are taking off the top it is one of the most satisfying and rewarding types of fishing.

You also get the odd days when you almost get the rod yanked out of your hand on the take only to find you’ve missed it ~sick.

I’d thoroughly recommend giving it a go.

                            Fly Fishing is great fun!

Although don’t agree with travelling light, as a self confessed tackle tart I take so much stuff with me it hurts!!!

I’d say fly fishing’s not about catching – it’s about fishing.

Yes, you would empty the lake with wag and magg. What’s the point in that when you are trout fishing? You can do that on a carp water can’t you?

It’s a real skill presenting an artificial (especially a dry fly) to a fish to induce a take.

I’ve had a couple of days out on difficult rivers, trying to catch grayling on a dry, which is awesome. And as Steve said, you pick your kit up and walk out of the house with all you need in 30 seconds.

If you are going to have a crack, get a proper casting lesson or two. Well worth it.
