Gareth’s piece made for interesting reading in respect of the World Championships and by and large he is right.

But it is extremely worrying about the lack of coverage: For Angling Times, Richard Grange and Lloyd Rogers did an excellent job to get everything sent over for a Tuesday publication (remember Gareth in your day, the paper was out on Wednesday – correct me if I am wrong). I do however agree there should have been a front page mention/or banner if possible. What was particularly a shame was there was no follow up piece to get the full value of sending the guys over.

Angler’s Mail I am afriad to say (as a former News Editor from over 20 years ago) is a lost case for match fishing. They of course go to press early, before the World Champs and so had to rely on DJ’s article a week later. I have told Tim Knight my views about their coverage in general but they seem content to carry on.

The Angling Trust’s formation and the dying days of the NFA of course saw the media/sponsorship side of things slip very badly. A well known sponsor was thorough disatisfied with the treatment received from these organisations and has decided to carry on with other projects including a local event where they get value from their investment including a bit of TV, thanks to Keith Arthur and his team.

We really have to look after our sponsors better.

I’m tempted to say there’s nothing much the AT can do about the media, but of course there is.

There can meet with them and stress to the editors the importance of good coverage for successes like this and the potential impact on sponsorship if the weeklies do what they have done this time around, and completing relegated England winning gold out of the main news.

I really think it’s a very worrying trend. In this day and age it would be VERY easy to get high res reports and images back to the office by, say 7pm on Sunday.

In my day we had to wait until Mick Rouse got back with his rolls of film.

I do tend to think that the weeklis are kind of taking England’s success for granted. If we went ten years without a medal, you can bet gold would make the front page.

For anyone who knew Jackie Dupuis, details of his address to send condolences can be found on the link below. The funeral is on July 16th.

Whilst Steve Partner’s piece in today’s AT has some validity, I am not convinced that television should be the criterion as to whether positive success is mentioned in the media or not.

Our national media need to be influenced and this requires regular intervention by the Angling Trust who need to build up a closer relationship with sports editors as well as environment columnists.

But it is all done after the event: We need to prepare the media in advance and we should have the major championships (World/European) listed in the major sports diaries, usually issued at the end of the year by lost of newspapers.

I know that BBC News would accept video if of reasonable quality.

The bottom line is that unless the sport elevates it profile, I fear it will never ever again see the numbers that we saw in the period up to the 80s because (positive – not silly season stuff)media coverage is needed to boost our numbers.

We need also to better point would be recruits to the next steps after they have enjoyed their taster sessions with our coaches.

They used to be, but that was in the days when the Telegraph, Independent etc had proper angling columnists. There’s no interest in angling there now…

However, you are right, the Angling Trust should issue each and every newspaper with a full list of major events in good time for their sporting calendar…. they just have to ask when the deadline for receiving the information is….

Obviously no guarantee the information will be used, but what’s the harm in it?
