46 Anglers took part in this popular bank match. Bob Gooden won with five fish for 12lb 3oz. Bob, from the Peterborough area, fished the Normanton bank and used a floating line with a black lure.During the match 60 fish were caught around the reservoir from the fishing lodge frontage, Normanton, Whitwell, then around the north side of the peninsula from the Finches all the way up to Armley Wood, Carrot Creek and Barn Hill Creek. Keith Jones took the biggest fish of the match – a 6lb 2oz Rainbow. Keith has landed a number of Rutland Water’s bigger specimens this season. The top four rods each won a Christmas hamper plus pool money for their efforts, and everyone who fished the match took home a raffle prize.
During the week bank anglers have found fish feeding close into the shoreline – at times within just feet of the bank. The fish have been pre occupied with the vast amounts of corixa that is available to them, a mixture of corixa patterns, general purpose nymphs ie Diawl Bachs, crunchers, hares ear is working alongside minkies, black lures and humungus. The best bet and easiest option has been to fish the margins first and avoid wading. The fish are closest to the shore first thing in the morning, then moving out, before returning close to the shore later in the afternoon. When conditions have permitted boat anglers have been taking fish up the North Arm, out in the middle or tight into the bank.
Predator fishing
Numbers of zander were caught on Sunday, one boat had 25 fish, while another boat had 4/5 pike.Fishing permits from 1 November to 31 December we have a special offer of two four fish permits for just £25, a saving of £8 on normal prices of £16.50 per day. This promotion is based on one angler only, fishing two separate days.
Winter restrictions
Winter fishing restrictions are now in place with no boats past the sailing limits to the nature reserves on either arm of the reservoir. Bank angling restrictions also apply with no bank fishing on the North Arm from the transformer all the way round to Dickensons Bay. Whilst on the South Arm no bank angling is permitted from the Sailing Club all the way round to the Old Hall Point.Brown trout season has ended, any browns caught after this date must be returned back alive as quickly as possible.
Rutland and Grafham lodges are open in December Wednesday – Sunday inclusive 9am to 2pm (closed 24,25 & 26 December).
