~think 1st thread of 2010, 1st of many i hope.
This year gonna make an effort to try this method,does anyone have info how to best use it,size and pattern of float etc, best depths for usin it, hook pattern any info greatly appreciated.

Wangla, hook in the loop will work given the right conditions but it’s not a miracle method that ‘catches’ every time. It is well worth trying and using on certain days.
I recently won an open match using HITL for the full match. Following week I drew the same peg, got out the same rig….couldn’t get a bite!!
I did catch later on using a ‘normal’ pellet rig.
It’s a method well worth practicing and having in your armoury.
Giles video is probably the best there is for info.

for floats, take a look at Drennan Carp 5, but give them a lick of varnish first, as the paint job is poor. I also have a Maver pattern, which is even better as far as i am concerned, but it doesn’t have the pattern type printed on it. Essentially you are looking for a buoyant, cane tip capable of supporting 2 No8.

Hook wise you can use any eyed pattern but it depends on what baits you’re using. When carping with maggot, i normally use B911s in size 18 and for pellet & corn I use Fox 2 in size 18 and 16. However, i’d prefer to fins a slightly lighter pattern than the Fox 2’s.

Just wondered what conditions are best?I have tried it a few times and sometimes it works well, others it hasn`t but I never thought about conditions. Thinking back the times its worked best is when its mild but quite calm but any sort of tow and I have done better switching to a normal rig. I tried it in my last match at Manor Farm and out of 3 pole lines it was my only line where I got a bite from and that day it was real cold but fairly still, no tow. Just thinking that maybe I have wasted time fishing it, when I should be more aware of the conditions in which it will work best?

For what its worth, I use the HiTL for every type of fishing these days. Even roach and castor fishing. I dont think this method will ever be understood due to the emphasis on presentation that some anglers feel the need to push. The whole purpose of this rig is that you see the bites before anglers using conventional rigs. Bulk shot and small droppers are the worst thing you can have down the line for F1s and skimmers. If the float buries you tend to miss the bites anyway and the double bulk of 2 or 3 number 8 shot means that there are very few indications that you dont see.

Adverse conditions are best approached with a more positive rig than a lighter one in my opinion. Fine bristles for me are the worse type of float you can use for any type of fishing. If it is blowing a bit then I leave more line between the pole tip. If you are missing bites on this rig it means you are striking too late. Unfortunately, under rough conditions you will not see the twitches anyway.. No matter what float you use!

~clap Cheers Giles,having not used this technique yet,i imagine it to be similar to those occasions on a flat calm,seeing a slight ripple on the float bristle ,striking and being in to a fish.( Unfortunately more luck than judgement in my case).
