Ok does anyone pay much attention to hook sharpness? It seems to be one of the current trends among carp and specimen anglers, but do match and pleasure anglers pay It much attention?
I would guess many do not why? well these days a large proportion of fishing Is done using the hair rig.
Obviously If you are fishing maggot directly on the hook you are well aware when the maggot does not nick cleanly on to the hook and may choose to replace the hook but how many check the hook whilst using a hair rig when the hook may be even more likely to have the point blunted.
Now I must say I am certainly going to pay more attention to the hook I use and the sharpness of the hook, I sometimes nick a couple of maggots on the hook when hair rigging other baits and noticed that very often the hook was blunt and needed replacing.
Now I am not sure If It Is at all practical to sharpen hooks In the smaller sizes, the carp men do use hooks larger and of a heavier gauge wire and some do sharpen there hooks often straight from the packet as well as during fishing.
I would be interested In the views of others on this subject, It certainly seems to be taken seriously by the carp men.

I always check the sharpness of my hooks as I only use a hair rig for one session then re tie them…Some times they don’t even last that long as when the hair goes curly I change the hook length…. I always check the sharpness on my finger and if it feels blunt then in the bin it goes…… With the average price of a hook 12p its worth binning them when it could cost you a lot more with lost fish in a match

I wouldn’t get too stressed about hook sharpness a lot of carp anglers are fishing natural waters and will be fishing over gravel etc. I no longer hook my rigs up on the bottom of a pole section and have started to use Drennan hookups they also stop elastic been over stretched when not in use.

Good point about the gravel I do fish a commercial that has a gravel bottom and as you rightly mention there are many ways that a hook can become blunt other than contact with a gravel bottom. 😉

IMO I check my hooks through out the course of the day especially after plumbing up as I have found that sometimes if the bottom of th the plummet is to shallow for the hook to sit in this can sometimes really blunt your hook even at times slightly bending the shank back over! As a match angler I don’t want to risk a lost fish just because my hook was blunt or weak. I’ve seen many anglers snag and to pull back in a hook that is slightly bent out if shape, then to bend it back in there teeth haha!!! I’d rather put a new hooklength on and no that my next fish ain’t gona be lost due to my bad hook!

As for pleasure Anglers they probs really don’t pay much attention to there hooks but in my eyes are pleasure anglers ie my dad there to catch the fish of there dreams or that lump that always seems to break them ha funny how it most if the time seems to come from the old tale of my hook broke most of been a big un haha sorry on abit if a rant here but in my eyes if you ain’t got the right hook, line even down to just not being able to tye a hook properly.
There are lots of good hooks to nylon available over the counter now a days that these problems can be sorted for novices and for top anglers
