Anglers had some good sport over the last seven days. There were a number of specimens reported to the office with sea species stealing the march on their freshwater cousins.

In general both boat and shore angling have been productive for sea anglers with some notable catches taken. Specimen bass were caught in Courtmacsherry with Mark Gannon and in Wexford by Jim Hendrick. In Red Bay, Hamish Currie’s boat saw a number of good fish landed including specimen sized blackmouth dogfish and skate.

Pike fishing is picking up and for the first time in many weeks a pike is Catch of the Week. Ronan Mullen caught a fine 22lb pike from the River Suck and reports from the area are that there are more to be taken. While this pike was caught on a deadbait early in the morning, lure fishing is also proving successful.
Coarse angling in Monaghan is going well at the moment with good bream on Lough Muckno and some really excellent roach fishing also available. On the Shannon system Kevin Lyons and his guests have had good mixed fishing. Kevin himself managed to put together a very respectable net of bream in the last few days. The King of Clubs was won by Kevin Johnson with a 83.25kg net of mixed coarse fish over the 4 days. Fishing throughout the competition was very good and the draw ensured an exciting finish on the last day.

The salmon season is almost over and anglers on the Nore are hoping to end on a high note after missing so much time on the water due to prolonged summer floods. Fishing there has produced some good salmon over the last few days. Some salmon are still showing at Lough Currane in Kerry and on the Delphi Fishery. The River Moy is doing well in the middle reaches but in general catches are tapering off. Those rivers which are running low look like having a quiet end to the season as the rain which has been forecast is unlikely to improve the situation much.

Fly fishing for trout on Lough Sheelin is still producing fish especially in the evenings on dry sedges. Good trout fishing was also reported from Lough Conn with one boat landing 35 trout. On Lough Melvin trout fishing was quiet but a fine 9½lb trout caught trolling from around the mouth of Clancy’s River by Eugene Harron on Tuesday.
