Is this good practice or is this just being wasteful, after a match if I’ve got 4 or 5 tops with rigs on I just bite them off and trash them regardless f how many fish they have caught is this is this waste full or does it stop you dipping in your box and taking naff rigs out later, what are your views ? Regards Anthony

Always check mine and if they look ok put them back on the winders, never had any problems with re-used rigs, sometimes just change the hook/hooklength, had some over a season and are still ok, you must have quite a line, shot, and hook bill at the end of a season! 😮

I do tend to get through a lot I must admit I tie a lot of rigs direct too that doesn’t help you get a blunt hook and its a new rig its got me thinking Pete.

Hook lengths Anthony !! I keep em if I’m going back to the same venue and the rig is sound.

I suppose it depends how much prep time you have as well Anthony.
If I’ve had an issue with a rig I trash it, wind knots, blunt hooks etc but I always use hook lengths, so it can be a part repair.
If you’ve got the time then new rigs every time, its difficult to see those flaws, nicks in line, stress on knots etc and the loss of a fish can be costly as Im sure we all know 😮

i think on commercials just a few at a time its not hard or time consuming to make a rig but after its been used a time or two they dont sit nice on winders and the next time it looks kinked and horrible
river rigs are different you need them made up even so you have to be careful putting them on winders never stretch the line on to a winder take your time and you don’t get the kinks so much 😉

Thanks for your replies, its made me think I should be using hook lengths in particular they do offer versatility I used to use them all the time its only this year where I’ve gone back to tying mostly direct rigs. It doesn’t take long to make up a 6ft carp rig with strung bulk of 8 x no 10s etc its 5 minutes job unlike making 8m to hand 3grm river rigs with Olivette then droppers and a hook length they take 30 minutes or flat floats I remember tying them they are painstaking.

i only scrap any rigs that ive caught well on ,put them back on the winder if it still looks alright , margin rigs obviously get changed more often.
