Has anyone out there tried freezing expanders, if so what was the outcome ie; do they thaw out OK. Thinking of doing some batches in different sizes, flavourings ect: just want to know if it’s viable idea???

Pre pellet pump, we used to soak the expander’s in water that had powdered gelatin added. You would put the pellets in a sandwich bag with the water and dissolved gelatin. Shake them about and leave them overnight, moving them around occasionally until the water had been absorbed. Then break them up in the morning and freeze in batches. Cant remember the quantities though so it might be an idea to experiment a bit until you find the right consistency. Nowadays I think most people pump them in the gelatinous water, but I am not convinced you get as good a pellet.

Refreezing can cause them to float,(freezedrying?) adding a little water and removing air can prevent this.

Dissolve a sachet of gelatine powder in 500ml just boiled water and allow to cool slightly. Add to your pellets and leave for 10 to 15 mins. Then drain well, put in a bag and remove as much air as poss, flattening the bag into a single layer of pellets if poss. Leave to cool and freeze of leave in the fidge overnight to use next day.

You can also pump them in the gelatine mix and then leave for no more than 10 mins before cooling and bagginng.

May depend on the ppellets you use, so may need tweaking a bit.

I have pumped expanders before and froze them – normally they should sink once defrosted as they re-absorbe water durin the thawing process. When defrosting – add a flavour as this wil be ‘drawn’ into the pellet as it re-absorbs moisture.

I was thinking of pumping my expanders in some thick flavoured liquid such as mainline active 8,was not sure it would work with only a small amount of liquid in the pump.
So i tryed it with half an inch of sunflower oil in my pellet pump the expanders sunk ok but will they soften enough to hook ?
I will try it with active 8 see how that works.
