REPORT
Long Eaton Victoria Angling Society’s fifth Championship match of the season was for the R S Kirkland Memorial Trophy, and was also the club’s Annual Outing match, with the day’s events including a pre-match breakfast and then a post match evening meal.
Between the two meals the match was fished over two lakes at Peatling Pools, Plough and Harrow, which perform quite evenly.
Len Barker managed to come out on top by a mere 0-08 over Dave Mayo. Len, fishing peg 22 on Plough Lake, fished paste at short range to catch mainly F1 carp and barbel, but several carp of around 5-00 in size swung the match in his favour, lifting his weight to 106-14 to win.
Runner up Dave Mayo, on peg 21 Harrow Lake, fished a similar match and had lots of F1 carp and barbel to make up his 106-06 catch.
The in form Steve Willcock, fishing Plough peg 4, put 94-02 on the scales for third place by fishing short at first before switching to the margins. His meat bait tempted carp to 8-00, and his efforts lifted him to the top of the Championship Leader-board.
Young Tom Potter took fourth place with 84-12 from Plough peg 15, with defending Club Champion Dave Cotterill easing into second place in the Championship with his fifth placed 74-08 from Plough peg 18.
The Championship Leader-board, after 5 of the 18 matches, now reads: Steve Willcock 76 points, Dave Cotterill 75, John Adamson 68, Dave Kent 67, Dave Mayo 67, Malc Munn 57, Tom Potter 51, Steve Talbot 49, Rob Pembridge and Nigel Brailsford both with 46.
