REPORT
LEVAS Championship match 17, also for the Shipstone Cup, was fished on a beautiful winter’s morning on the Kingfisher Lake at Beechwood Park (Elvaston) by 29 anglers. This was also a joint match with Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) Angling Club.
Although the lake has favoured areas, it has proven to be as good a venue as any, especially as the recent attendance rates has a need for venues capable to taking between 25 and 30 anglers in the matches, and good weights are also thrown up from unexpected pegs from time to time.
Championship leader Dave Cotterill continued his blistering form with yet another superb display of pole fishing. Staring the match fishing “down the track” on his peg 38 with soft pellet he caught around 25 smallish carp over the first three hours to give himself a good base weight. He then switched to long pole and punched bread fished tight to the island where he found big carp lurking. he extracted 15 of these in the latter stages to boost his weight to a magnificent 82-08 for a clear win.
On the opposite side of the lake three anglers in a row, on pegs 12, 13 and 14, fought for the next three places. David Allen (peg 12) caught carp at a steady rate throughout the match on single maggot fished on long pole to end with 77-04 for second place. On peg 13 veteran Ivan Carrier brought his experience to bear and fishing caster on long pole caught steadily throughout to end with 65-00 of carp for third place, Championship contender Rob Pembridge (peg 14) struggled in the early stages before finding the correct bait (caster), and in spite of losing a number of fish managing to scrape fourth place with 49-14.
Hotly behind Rob and taking fifth place from peg 20 was his travelling partner Steve Talbot, who managed 49-08, Les Smedley (peg 6) in sixth place with 35-10.
Dave Cotterill has cemented his Championship lead by moving to 244 points, Rob Pembridge moving up to second with 206, above Paul Richardson on 198 (having dropped 5 points), Les Smedley in fourth on 192 having dropped 4.
With two matches remaining, the top four are all now in the position where they have 15 counting results, so with all in the position where they need to drop points in order to gain more, this will prove very interesting. The penultimate match is on 20 November on Heron Lake at Birch House Fishery, with the final one back on Kingfisher at Beechwood Park (also the Fur & Feather Match) on Sunday 4 December.
