I fish commercials mainly and always end up using .13 powerline for winter going down to 0.9 hooklength and summer unless paste or margin then i use .17 straight through, would it be better to make winter pole rigs on .11 ,thoughts anyone?

If you are finding it necessary to drop to .09 then I would suggest coming down to .12 rig line . Your problem is that standard Reflo is nigh on two dia up on what’s on the spool . What you need is a fresh set of floats . Then do these on an accurate .12 . keep your summer set separate . And for Red Letter winter days when you draw solid . 😉 😉 😉 🙂

Why do you find the need to go to such fine diameter rigs line (not hooklengths).

The lowest I make up rigs is 0.13 powerline. You’ll get more tangles on lighter line, more wind knots, more kinking and more shot damage.

Can’t really see the advantage in going lighter – am I missing something?

I agree with nick2b (rhymes that:), I think sometimes people do it because they think they should rather than because they need to???
Dave doesn’t say what he’s going down to 09 to catch but I assume F1’s?
I would never go lower than 0.11 for small carp or 0.13 for proper ones 😮

I normally go for .12 to .10 hooklength after the first frosts. Never had to go lighter than that to get bites. Recently switched to drennan rig line so will have to experiment a bit this coming winter. Was using silkshock.

You are correct he did not say what fish he was targeting when he was dropping to .09 . Even so a rig line of .12 is a correct balance giving you a sweet advantage to use a .10 , 11 , or .12 dia hooklength straight through . Drennan Double strength in .128 is agreat workhorse that suffers shot on the line and lasts well and is nearer .13 if it makes you happy . When I fished on carp commercials full time I also became blind to line thickness . It can become difficult to get to grips with the need even believing it cannot be necessary . As winter chills the water and the winning weights drop there can be every reason to drop hook sizes which in turn requires finer elastics which means thick lines are not quite what you are after . Balanced tackle is the key here , but reading between the lines I think maybe there is no need to drop this dramatic too soon . Depending on species and your own results . Don’t forget Reflo Line is so good cause it’s so thick !!!! 😮

013 rig line and 011 hooklength for me with white hydro you don’t get broke too often, 011 powerline is one of the best lines every made, but in contrast I find 0.10.9 terrible very subtle.and weak

Reflo has a good following . it is a good workhorse line that suits many but ! You must compare with lines of the same dia . It is not what it says on the spool . But are in in luck . Preston have realised the need to have line that is what it says and they sell a product called Reflo Precision Power . You can use this on your new set of floats that I advised you to get . Keeping them separate . You will enjoy your new set up . Obviously if you frequent the same ponds that only contain lumps and there is nothing to gain scaling down !! Don’t bother. The top anglers will be set up along these lines . Why do you think they have loads of pole rig trays . ? It’s to cover lots of situations . The effort and extra expense should reward you . Something to do on the dark nights ! Also with your extra effort you can visit maybe a non carp venue and compete . Trying to cut corners and on the cheap won’t work .!! 🙂
